Jacques O'Neill's family reveal he has ADHD and urge viewers to 'be kind'

Jacques O’Neill’s family have addressed the ongoing criticism the Love Island contestant is facing for his behaviour to fellow islander Paige Thorne, revealing that he was diagnosed with ADHD as a child.

Across the ITV reality dating show so far, viewers have criticised Jacques’ treatment of Paige, urging her to see the light and ditch him, after he shared intimate moments with Casa Amor bombshell Cheyanne Kerr, before returning to Paige and claiming he stayed loyal.

Explosive arguments between Paige and Jacques followed, with them both in tears, and in last night’s episode, Paige called it quits, accusing Jacques of being ‘fake’ and ‘immature.’

Paige continued: ‘I’d love to just fall back into the playful banter that we have, but respectfully honey, you’ve f***ed it,’ after Jacques tried to excuse his Casa Amor antics as ‘testing’ his feelings for Paige.

However, Jacques’ family have now jumped in and addressed the backlash, as they’ve been tasked with taking over his social media accounts while he’s in the villa.

Sharing a screenshot of what ADHD is, explaining: ‘Sometimes, people living with ADHD may behave in ways that come off as rude or disrespectful,’ Jacques’ brother penned: ‘Jacques was diagnosed with ADHD when he was 9 years old.

‘By no means is this a get out clause for his actions but it is to show that he can fundamentally struggle with his emotions at times.

‘He is an amazing person who I’m proud to call my friend/little brother.

‘All the hate thrown towards Jacques doesn’t go to him directly….It comes to his loved ones who have always supported him and not just whilst he is on Love Island.’

The caption concluded: ‘Love Island, although real. Is still a show where the producers do have control and we see 45minutes out of the 1440 in 24hours. Please be kind.’

Friends and fans shared their support in the comments, with ex-Islander Jake Cornish commenting: ‘Hope family and friends all ok.’

This comes after Paige’s family took to the star’s Instagram page to share their thoughts on Jacques, writing: ‘So proud of how [Paige] handled that!’

Some viewers had branded him ‘disgusting’ and a ‘walking red flag’ while even ex-Islanders have jumped in to show they’re on Team Paige.

‘Jacques, the only boots I want you to put on, hun, is your f*****g walking boots to get home. Don’t even bother. Let the girl go,’ last year’s contestant Faye Winter told her Instagram Story.

Meanwhile, Liberty Poole wrote that Paige ‘deserves 100 times better’ after watching the drama unfold in shock, while Shaughna Phillips tweeted: ‘Paige there is only one way to settle this, and it’s violence’.

Faye, who finished third in 2021, also said: ‘Oh Paige, I want to come in and rescue you. Please, please, please… Get rid of your man!

‘Always backed this girl. Wanna back her so hard. I can’t say enough good things about this girl’.

Love Island continues tonight at 9pm on ITV and ITV Hub.
