James Whale missing from TalkTV show as he battles rough cancer diagnosis

James Whale says Phillip Schofield ‘will never work again’

James Whale was missing from his TalkTV show last weekend as he continues to battle stage four cancer.

The 72-year-old is set to return to his show later this week after his co-star explained he was absent as he had been “feeling rough”.

Ash Gould and Lizzy Cundy stepped in for James over the weekend and informed fans about the usual host’s absence.

Ash explained: “Whale’s not in tonight because he was just feeling a bit rough.

“He went to hospital to get a few checks and he’s back home now.”

Lizzie reassured viewers further by stating: “I spoke to him 10 minutes ago, in fine fettle.

“When I spoke to him, he said, ‘Yeah I’m coming in Saturday, I’m coming in,’ but then he wasn’t… but you never know and hopefully he’ll recuperate.”

James recently revealed he has sadly reached the end of his treatment for terminal cancer, leaving him with just months to live.

The TalkRADIO presenter told Express.co.uk: “The cancer gets into your head and sometimes you can’t stand noise.

“At the moment, I have got cancer fatigue, which makes you very tired.

“Some days I might feel sorry for myself. I feel sorry for my wife really. It’s more difficult for her.”

James also explained he had considered assisted death in a Swiss clinic, but according to The Mirror he chose to spend his remaining time with his family instead.

He was first diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2000 but sadly the disease returned 20 years later before spreading.

James lost his first wife Melinda to lung cancer back in 2018 when she was just 68.

The couple were married for 48 years and had two sons together.

Talking to The Sun about A Place in the Sun presenter Jonnie Irwin, who also has terminal cancer, James stated: “I found it very difficult to talk about mine because I didn’t want people to think I was using it to get sympathy or for any other reason.

“But along with a number of other people in the public eye, I am at stage four. There is no stage five.”
