Jane Moore pays tribute to workaholic Paul OGrady after death

Jane Moore says Paul O’Grady ‘should have been taking it easy’ when she was detailing how much he loved work

On Tuesday, March 28 comedian and presenter Paul O’Grady died “unexpectedly but peacefully” with tributes from his friends and family flooding in. Loose Women panellists Jane Moore, Christine Lampard, Denise Welch and Kelle Bryant spoke fondly of their friend, with Jane claiming Paul was a “workaholic” before paying tribute.

Paul’s husband Andre Portasio said in a statement: “It is with great sadness that I inform you that Paul has passed away unexpectedly but peacefully yesterday evening.

“We ask, at this difficult time, that whilst you celebrate his life you also respect our privacy as we come to terms with this loss.”

Christine began the tribute: “The passing of a true legend on both stage and screen, presenter, comedian and national treasure Paul O’Grady.

“Paul’s husband announced that he had died unexpectedly but peacefully last night, a good friend of our show for many years Paul has been here through thick and thin.”

The show played clips from when Paul had visited the show over the years, which included Carol McGiffin revealing she had a “dirty” dream about him.

She added: “So many memories and what an incredible person,” with Denise adding she couldn’t believe he had gone, leaving a legacy behind.

Jane added: “You mentioned his husband Andre and I just think how must he be feeling today because Paul was such a massive presence.

“I mean everybody misses somebody when they die but when they’re that charismatic. I wouldn’t say I was close, I just have known him for a very long time.

“I used to go and see him when he was Lily Savage and he was performing at the Vauxhall Tavern and I used to go there a lot and he was hilarious.

“What I take solace from is he was very happy. A bit of a workaholic, really should have been taking it easy but he just loved working.

“They bought a flat in Amsterdam and they spent a lot of years. He loved Amsterdam and spent a lot of time in Amsterdam.

“Yeah so he was very very happy and as you say he went peacefully but it’s no age is it?”

Tributes from his friends came pouring in, from people he had worked closely with, to others who admired his work throughout his career.

One such tribute came from The Queen Consort who had built a bond with the TV star through their love of dogs and his work at Battersea Dogs Home.

The Royal Family’s official Twitter account paid tribute to Paul, posting an image of Camilla with the star.

It read: “Deeply saddened to hear of the death of Paul O’Grady, who worked closely with Her Majesty in support of @Battersea_, providing lots of laughter and many waggy-tailed memories.” (sic)

Long-time friend and producer, Malcolm Prince penned he only visited Paul at his home on Tuesday morning.

“I popped round to Paul’s for a good old catch-up. Surrounded by his beloved dogs, he was laughing smiling and full of life. He was looking forward to so many new projects.

“And now he’s gone I can’t believe it. We have lost a unique talent – and I’ve lost a dear friend. We were all lucky to have Paul in our lives.” (sic)
