Jo Joyner on surprise of ‘accidental reunion’ with EastEnders co-star

For Her Sins: Jo Joyner stars in Channel 5 trailer

For Her Sins is airing on Channel 5 and it sees EastEnders star Jo Joyner reunited with her on-screen mother, Ann Mitchell.

The pair played Tanya Branning and Cora Cross, who were mother and daughter, in the BBC soap many years ago.

Now, they star as mother and daughter again with Jo playing Laura and Ann playing Maggie.

Addressing the casting, she told Express.co.uk and other press: “Isn’t it funny? Completely accidental on their part as well.

“When they cast they didn’t realise… it wasn’t a conscious thing.

“Actually, very often when you work with somebody, a sad part of the end of the job is you know you are very unlikely to be cast with them again.

“I love working with Jake Wood, I know very rarely will we ever be husband and wife again, it’s unlikely we will ever be in the same show.

“Paul Nicholls I have done it with a couple of times and that was a surprise, and Sunetra Sarka, but it’s always a really lovely thing.”

She described the reunion with Ann as particularly special, adding: “I have a huge amount of admiration for Ann.

“She’s such a wonderful actress and she’s got such an incredible history and so many wonderful stories.

“But on the schedule of EastEnders and the atmosphere you have on the relentless soaps we never really got to chat or spend time with each other.

“Nobody hangs around in Borehamwood, we all go home and learn tomorrow’s stuff.

“Whereas for this, we were all working away from home so at the end of the night we could go for a glass of wine after work and talk.

“It was just a calmer, easier atmosphere to work in so we properly got to know each other and we hadn’t all those years of working together before.”

Opening up on the pair’s relationship in For Her Sins compared to EastEnders, she added: “It was a different kind of relationship as well.

“So our relationship as mother and daughter before, she was the kind of weaker soul that needed saving.

“But in this sense, she is incredibly powerful and she plays powerful very well. She’s in charge.

“It’s a complex, close relationship and she’s a powerful woman and Ann is so good at it that it just makes your job easier to act on it.”
