American Idol: Katy Perry misleads a contestant
Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan had the unenviable task of whittling down the final few American Idol hopefuls on Sunday evening as the live shows edge ever closer. However, with a number of emotional contestants waiting with bated breath to learn their fate, ABC viewers were less than pleased with Katy when she toyed with several singers by pretending they hadn’t made it through.
One such example came when the three judges sat down with Nutsa Buzaladze to reveal her fate in the competition.
“So much fun watching you being that amazing showmanship,” Katy said to Nutsa who beamed as she replied: “Thank you so much.”
But Katy took the conversation down a more nervy path as she continued: “But, as you know, it’s a tough competition.”
“I know,” an understanding Nutsa replied as her face became more downbeat.
“It’s not just about winning, it’s about learning as Lionel says,” Katy went on before her fellow judge chipped in: “When you win, you win. When you lose, you learn.”
At this point, Nutsa appeared to have accepted the fate the judges were teeing up for her – and Katy did little to tease she wouldn’t actually be leaving.
She went on further: “So, we have really appreciated you being in this competition.
“Thank you for everything you brought and we did not put you in the Top 24.”
“It’s okay,” an emotional Nutsa replied as she feared her dreams were dashed.
However, Katy pulled out a change in tactics as she U-turned: “You put yourself in that Top 24.
“Nutsa, you put yourself in that Top 24 with your spectacular talent,” Katy tried to explain while a clearly confused Nutsa scanned her eyes around the studio.
Spelling things out for the flustered contestant, Katy tried to explain: “We didn’t put you there, you did. But as confusing as that seems, you’re going to the Top 24.”

Nutsa was understandably ecstatic despite Katy’s rollercoaster verdict – although American Idol fans at home weren’t as pleased with the Teenage Dream hitmaker’s manner.
Taking to Twitter, Mariah Budd fumed: “Katy Perry tries way too hard. Like get to the point girl. There is no need for the extra drama #AmericanIdol.”
While Jahna Banana referred to Nutsa specifically as they raged: “#AmericanIdol Katy needs to stop it with the fakeouts. Pulling the ‘we didn’t put you in the top 24, you put yourself in the top 24’ on Nutsa?
“Poor girl was so d**n confused. English is her second language, and even though her English is great, it was a high-stress situation.”
Meanwhile, Eric Sloss added: “I don’t like how Katy does all these fake outs with these singers. She did it at least 4-5 times tonight. A little mean especially when your first language isn’t English. #AmericanIdol.”
While @YoungRichSkinn2 weighed in: “Can Katy stop….. I’ve had enough of the s**t #AmericanIdol just tell them if they going through or not ma all that extra we don’t need hurry it up, next contestant pls.”
And @queenofthebarbs echoed: “#AmericanIdol is getting ridiculous with trying to trick contestants to make them think they didn’t get into the top 24.”
However, there was some support for Katy’s antics, as @nikola_minik argued: “I swear Katy Perry is to good at these fake outs #AmericanIdol.” (sic)
American Idol continues Sundays on ABC in the USA. A UK release date is yet to be announced.
