Tonight’s episode of Emmerdale focused solely on the male cast as Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) became determined to get his friends talking. During their evening, Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson) opened up about the time he tried to end his life.
Marlon’s lock-in was created after he managed to save Paddy (Dominic Brunt). His friend had reached crisis point after months of depression and isolation.
In the aftermath, Marlon, Bear (Joshua Richards) and Paddy’s pals have tried to get him to open up, but up until now, he hasn’t been ready.
As Cain (Jeff Hordley), Sam (James Hooton), Bob (Tony Audenshaw), Liam, Marlon, Nate (Jurell Carter), Jimmy (Nick Miles) and Charles (Kevin Mathurin) gathered around the bar, things were a little awkward, they didn’t quite know what to say.
Soon enough, topic of conversation turned to Paddy, who was in the backroom.
With Cain being Cain, he got up and tried to go and get Paddy, pointing out that no one actually knows what he’s doing or thinking during that moment.
Liam reminded him that if Paddy’s not ready to talk, he’s simply not ready to talk.
Somewhat annoyed, Cain thought Liam was being Doctor Liam, using his medical knowledge of mental health struggles to make it sound as though he could relate.
Liam then revealed he can relate on a personal level – because he tried to end his life while he was at medical school.
He told his fellow villagers that while he was training, he felt as though he didn’t really have any friends, and if it wasn’t for another student entering his room to get a textbook back, he wouldn’t be alive.
As a younger Liam recovered, he realised just how loved he was, as everyone on the same corridor as him took it in turns to ensure he was never on his own.
