Love Island Aftersun awkward moments – lipstick fail, humiliation, name gaffe

The Love Island drama doesn’t always go down in the iconic villa – the series’ spin-off show AfterSun is often to blame for the show’s biggest dramas and scandals.

Hosted by Maya Jama, AfterSun sees panelists, booted Islanders and members of the public all spill the tea and share their thoughts on the latest Love Island shenanigans.

And more often than none, viewers can expect plenty of drama to take place.

So, with the 2023 Winter series coming to an end, the Daily Star has taken a look back at the most awkward and cringe moments of AfterSun.

Laura’s lipstick blunder

In last year’s series, host-at-the-time Laura Whitmore was left red-faced when she realised had pink lipstick all over her teeth during a live show.

Laura was chatting about the week’s latest Love Island drama when she suffered the makeup mishap.

And the Irish beauty was completely unaware her front teeth were covered in lipstick – and nobody seemed to let her know.

Viewers watching After Sun soon pointed out that she had more lippy on her teeth than her lips.

“Omg why’s no one telling Laura Whitmore shes got pure pink lipstick in her teeth?” Said one viewer.

But in typical Laura Whitmore spirit, she made light of the blunder on Twitter, sharing a gif of someone smearing lipstick on their teeth, accompanied by the caption: “Well that was a fun show!”

Danica‘s ‘rejection’ video

In 2022, viewers were left fuming when bosses “humiliated” Danica on After Sun, by showing her numerous rejections on the show.

In the episode, Laura played a Mission Impossible style clip of the Leicester beauty’s five attempts to find a man.

“You were a woman on a bit of a mission, take a look at this,” said the host Laura.

The video then showed Danica finding “her targets” who then friendzoned her one by one.

Although she seemed to brush it off, people watching the show at home were left uncomfortable.

“You invited Danica to aftersun just to make fun of her? The producers must pay for their crimes!!!” raged one fan.

Remi ‘humiliated’

Another Islander that was accused of being “humiliated” on AfterSun was series xx star Remi Lambert.

During the show, Laura asked Remi to perform a rap live on air, who awkwardly agreed before delivering the rap.

As he fumbled over the words, Remi left AfterSun studio guests as well as viewers at home, wincing.

Laura was then accused of “humiliating” Remi – and she later hit back at the accusation.

She wrote on Twitter: “Remi is a rapper and asked in good faith in advance if he’d rap and prepare something which he did.

“Live Telly is nerve-wracking, believe me, so maybe he was a bit nervous but he deserved to have his time.”

Name blunder

This year, previous Islander Georgia Steel sparked fury online after she failed to pronounce Shaq Muhammad's name correctly.

The 24-year-old appeared onAftersun to share her thoughts on the current islanders.

When asked by presenter Maya who she reckons is one of her strongest couples, Georgia appeared to stumble on her words.

She said: "But I think my strongest would be Tanya and Zack."

Correcting her, Maya replied: "Tanya and Shaq, yeah.”

Georgia then said: "I pronounce Zack because I always get it wrong. So I just go with Zack but I know that's obviously not his name.

Moving on swiftly, Maya reassured the Love Island star that it was "fine".

But fans online were not best pleased with Georgia's slip up and took to Twitter to hit back.

One outraged fan wrote: "Georgia calling Shaq 'Zack' microaggression much?? Very cringe to watch."

Awkward on-air blunder

Last month, viewers were left cringing at their TV screens after former Islander Indiyah Polack made several “awkward” on-air blunders in AfterSun.

Appearing on the show, Indiyah had the show’s loyal legion of fans “cringing” when she misnamed several of the 2023 stars.

Shortly after getting all the gossip from the Casa Amor girls, host Maya handed over to Indiyah to hear what the Casa boys had to say.

“Now Bailey,” Indiyah began, before turning to who she thought was Bailey but was actually Frankie.

Straight away, Frankie darted his eyes to the real Bailey, who was sitting behind him, to which Indiyah soon clocked on and smoothly transitioned like a pro.

"You hit things off with Claudia, but do you think things went a bit left?” Indiyah continued.

“Considering how Will was in the villa?” she added, but she again got the name wrong as Claudia is instead coupled up with Casey not Will.

Bailey, seeming to brush off another name blunder, then replied: “Yeah, you don’t want to push it too much.”

He added: “I was pretty shocked that I didn’t go into the main villa. Only time will tell.”
