Love Islands Martin accuses girls of double standards for siding with Tanya

Love Island star Martin Akinola, who was dumped from the island in a brutal recoupling, has hit out at his female co-stars as he accuses them of having double standards.

Reflecting on his time in the villa Martin branded a number of the islanders as hypocrites after they remained supportive of Tanya Manhega, despite the fact that she humiliated Martin on national TV.

This year's Love Island has departed from the norm somewhat, with some viewers accusing the islanders of "toxic femininity" as the women have united around Tanya rather than calling her out.

Other fans have pointed out that many of those supportive of Tanya have criticised the men for acting in a similar way to her.

Speaking about these double standards Martin, 27, told The Daily Mail: "There's a lot of double standards right now… 120 per cent. Do you know how horrible it was having to watch Tanya and Shaq literally snog across from me every day? Every day I saw it.

"Obviously if the roles were reversed there would have been a riot. I would have had so many complaints to Ofcom. At no point did the girls tell Tanya that she was in the wrong, they literally did not do that. They supported each other. I was thinking 'what's going on here?'"

Viewers of the show have shared their agreement with Martin's sentiments, with one posting to Twitter: "The double standards is crazy. These girls are defending tanya, but angry at their guys for the exact same thing?? Make it make sense."

And another argued: "The toxic femininity on Love Island this year is ridiculous. The girls need calling out. It’s a joke."

Summer Love Island finalist Dami Hope also waded into the argument, writing: "Ngl if none of the girls can stand up to Tanya for Shaq but wanna have sumn to say about Will and Tom – just blatant display of double standards."

In his exit interview, Martin took a swipe at his former flame, arguing that Tanya may not actually love Shaq as she claims to.

He said: "Genuinely, I think Shaq might be in love with her. But I don’t think she’s in love with him. She followed her heart – which was fair enough – but she went about it the wrong way."

Martin also insisted that there’s no hard feelings between then, but that he’s backing other couples to win the show.

He said: “I told her good luck and I wish her and Shaq well. When I left the villa as well I said good luck as I saw she felt so bad. She did what she had to do, she just went about it the wrong way really.”
