Luther: The Fallen Sun dropped on Netflix recently after it was released in cinemas worldwide with the story transferring to the big screen. The movie is currently riding high on Netflix’s film charts and follows the now disgraced police detective John Luther (played by Idris Elba) taking on his biggest foe to date: city trader and serial killer David Robey (Andy Serkis). Luther: The Fallen Sun features Dermot Crowley, who reprises his role as Martin Shenk from the BBC TV series.

Will there be another series of Luther?

With the film performing so well on Netflix, some are curious to know if this could mark a return for Luther to the small screen.

Sadly, there are currently no plans for another season of Luther but lead Elba has expressed interest in continuing the franchise through a series of films.

He said in a recent interview with SpringHill: “For five seasons I’ve been trawling this character around for 10 years.

“It’s a character that I just keep going back to. I don’t go back to that many characters. I like to just see them off but this one was one that I just kept getting drawn back into.

“And one of the ambitions for Luther was the take it to the larger screen. Like trying to to take it to a place where we could compete with Bond.”

Elba admitted only the BBC was interested in picking up Luther with one season leading on to five given the show’s immense popularity.

He said after being touted many times to take on the iconic role of James Bond, he wanted to Luther to be its own entity.

Elba said: “I’m very proud of the film because it really does embody the idea that dreams come true.

“As corny as that sounds, we always wanted to have a character that was ours. It’s mine.”

Given the success Luther: The Fallen Sun has had both on Netflix and in cinemas, it looks like this could be the start of a successful film franchise.

Moreover, switching from TV to film may also be the betterment of the franchise given seasons of Luther were becoming shorter over the years.

Season one consisted of six episodes back in 2010 with the following outings dropping down to four instalments.

Season four in 2015 was the briefest outing of Luther with a mere two episodes.

At the time, Elba said this was down to time constraints for both himself and Luther’s creator and novelist Neil Cross.

As Elba is such an in-demand actor, producer, DJ and philanthropist, among many other roles, devoting time to another Luther film rather than shooting a whole season of the TV series would be the way forward.

Luther: The Fallen Sun has received mixed reviews from the critics as the show morphs from crime drama into a vigilante action hero set-piece.

Despite the lacklustre reviews for Luther, the franchise has a huge and loyal fanbase who will be eager to see more from the detective as he enters a new era.

Elba went on to tell Collider: “Actually, I think that Luther really has sort of earned its stripes now.”

The multi-hyphenate said Luther had done well on television and moving to film was the next stage in the franchise’s evolution.

He said: “However, now we have this really slightly larger scale, which I think it deserves, and I think if we move this film franchise forward, it would be great to see what we can do in different landscapes.

“Wouldn’t it be interesting to see Luther in Chile or Luther in LA? Wouldn’t it be great?”
