Meryl Streep left wondering ‘am I going to die’ in new role

Meryl Streep joins Only Murders in the Building

There have been quite a few exciting cast announcements for season three of Only Murders in the Building.

From Paul Rudd, whose flashforward murder at the end of season two will play out in the upcoming season, to Emily in Paris’ Ashley Park and Grey’s Anatomy’s Jesse Williams.

But many fans will be especially excited to see award-winning actress Meryl Streep join the hit Hulu show.

Yet Meryl herself was actually kept in the dark about the nature of her character while they filmed the new episodes.

Only Murders in the Building’s boss John Hoffman has recently revealed that the actress wasn’t aware if her character could be a killer or a potential victim in the upcoming season.

John told Deadline: “Throughout the season, we keep the scripts pretty tight, even with our main cast. I loved watching Meryl be attuned to that and come to that in some way throughout season three.”

He continued: “She kept on wondering, ‘Am I going to die? Am I going to be the murderer?’ She had to know what was coming up next, it was funny.”

Fans of the show got a first look at Meryl in the role back in March when her character was seen doing a roundtable script reading in the trailer.

“Oh my god, it’s me!” she laughs, after the rest of the room look on in silence. “Oh, I’m sorry. It’s me, isn’t it?”

So, it appears that Meryl’s character is part of the same stage production as Paul Rudd’s character, whose presence in the new season was hinted at during the closing moments of the season two finale.

While it is still unknown exactly who Meryl and Paul will play, they join series regulars Martin Short, Steve Martin and Selena Gomez.

However, has John divulged a bit more than he should have when he spoke to TVLine about Paul’s appearance on the show?

He asserted: “Our victims play major parts in the season, so we’re really excited to have him be a part of it.”

So, could Meryl’s character wind up a victim too? Viewers will have to tune in to find out.

Only Murders in the Building season 3 will premiere in the UK on Disney+ and in the US on Hulu on August 8. The first two seasons are available to stream now.
