Manchester United saw off Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening in a comprehensive 2-0 win thanks to goals from Fred and Bruno Fernandes. One man who stole the headlines despite the win, however, was unused substitute Cristiano Ronaldo, who manager Erik Ten Hag felt was unneeded to see his side to victory. This resulted in Ronaldo leaving his seat and heading down the tunnel before the final whistle, something Mike Bushell was keen to discuss with Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty on Thursday’s BBC Breakfast.

“Mike’s with us now,” Charlie said as he teed up the sports round-up. “The thing is Mike when we look at this picture behind us here…”

A snap of Ronaldo then appeared behind the trio as Charlie continued: “If a club signs a superstar, a real genuine world superstar, re-signs him…

“When he does something, we talk about it. I mean, that’s the way it works,” he added before Mike chipped in.

After mentioning Ronaldo’s antics earlier in the show, Mike replied: “And we are talking about it, Cristiano Ronaldo, he’s on the back pages this morning.”

However, he admitted the focus on Ronaldo rather than the match itself had irked one of his colleagues.

“Maybe I have upset some Manchester United fans like Tracy the floor manager who’s said, ‘Why are you not talking about Manchester United’s great performance, which it was, rather than Cristiano Ronaldo?’

“But the thing is he made a statement,” Mike defended.

Naga then weighed in: “Football matches happen. Football scores happen, its stars are the people we end up talking about.”

Mike agreed: “And he made a statement and he’ll have to see the manager today to explain why he walked off down the tunnel having not been used at all during the match before the end,

“Taking the gloss off almost the celebrations on the pitch by his Manchester United teammates.

“I mean, Gary Lineker has said it’s ‘unacceptable’. So yeah, one of Manchester United’s best performances of the season, but at the end, their biggest name was rather conspicuous by his absence.”

Mike went on to quip the “dominant display” would have cheered up Tracy prior to Ronaldo’s walk-off.

When asked about his player’s display, Ten Hag said after the match: “I don’t pay attention today, we deal with that tomorrow.

“I want to get the focus on this team, was a magnificent performance from all the 11 players.”

Following his walk-off down the Old Trafford tunnel, Ronaldo has come under criticism from a number of pundits and fans in the football world.

Micah Richards appeared on BBC Breakfast later in the show and weighed in with his thoughts.

“Yesterday, it was so frustrating just because Ronaldo made it about him,” Micah said.

“The team got a great win against Spurs, Ten Hag had problems with him pre-season as well, not knowing whether to sell him or keep him.

“The team have been doing really well without him starting so to do that, it was just unprofessional.”

BBC Breakfast airs daily at 6am on BBC One.
