The May 7 awards show, which was initially set to be hosted by Drew Barrymore before she dropped out last week, is now shifting away from a live ceremony.
Instead of the awards’ usual format of announcing each winner with a selection of live performances for viewers watching at home, the ceremony will consist of playing throwback clips and music performances from previous shows.
In a statement obtained by People on Friday, Bruce Gillmer, President of Music, Music Talent, Programming and Events at Paramount Global, and an executive producer of the MTV Movie & TV Awards, detailed the change of plan.
He explained: “As we carefully navigate how best to deliver the fan first awards’ show we envisioned that our team has worked so hard to create.
“We’re pivoting away from a live event that still enables us to produce a memorable night full of exclusive sneak peeks, irreverent categories our audience has come to expect.
“And countless moments that will both surprise and delight as we honour the best of film and TV over the past year,” Bruce added.
Following the change of plan, viewers of the awards have stormed to Twitter claiming the “whole thing” should have been scrapped.
Twitter user @MalloryMay90 fumed: “I feel like the whole thing should have been cancelled in solidarity with the strike. Just announce the winners online and try again next year.”

With another viewer, @SebanicolasR92 adding: “Not they are not! Tell the truth and at least cancel them in support of the writers guild of America.
“If you want rating, it’s okay but at least care about cinema. A show with no presenters and a host. Tell all turned down. make a statement at least,” [sic] they added.
A third user @l_fergal noted: “It probably needs to be scrapped altogether as MTV is no longer relevant as it used to be.”
@softlyblooms wrote: “ok so the MTV movie and tv awards won’t have an audience and won’t be live. they just have a pre-recorded ceremony they’re airing.”
“Omg the mtv movie and tv awards is literally just clips out together, what is this,” @whisperrjosephh said.
While @brixirinachs pointed out: “This MTV Award Show is terrible.”
The MTV Movie & TV Awards 2023 is available to stream on MTV or Paramount+ in the US.
