Netflix fans fume ‘s**t like this needs to stop’ after hit film axed from site

The Power of the Dog official trailer from Netflix

Netflix UK subscribers will be losing access to the Oscar-winning film The Power of the Dog in the upcoming weeks.

As per the streaming service’s page that provides notes for the acclaimed film, the last day fans can watch it is August 18, 2023.

Although the UK site is losing the movie, The Power of the Dog will seemingly still be available to stream internationally – which includes regions like the US and Europe.

The popular western hit is directed by Jane Campion and stars Benedict Cumberbatch who plays the lead character of Phil Burbank.

After its premiere in 2021, the film went on to earn a host of Oscar nominations, with Jane taking home the Best Director award.

The blockbuster hit is also branded a Netflix original on the website, which usually means it signs an exclusivity deal in certain territories, and sometimes when it co-produces a project – however that is not the case with The Power of The Dog.

It is in fact co-produced by BBC Films meaning there could be a chance that the film will end up being available to stream on BBC iPlayer, but this is yet to be confirmed.

Other Netflix originals like His House, which was similarly axed from the streamer in October of 2022, went on to be available to stream on BBC iPlayer.

Despite the film’s uncertain streaming future, fans can buy the movie as a Criterion Collection Blu-ray.

After hearing the news of The Power of The Dog’s axe from Netflix, fans stormed to social media to vent their frustrations about yet another popular hit being removed from the site.

Taking to Twitter @ThePocketTaco2 fumed: “S**t like this really needs to stop.”

With @CinemaLord1 adding: “Why would they just delete it? It was nominated for best picture!”

User @__sallad__ also rightly pointed out: “Was this not a Netflix original? Did they not get like 12 Oscar nominations?”

A fourth confused fan @arnievinick1 wrote: “This movie won the British Film Academy award for Best Picture and they’re removing it from Netflix UK?”

Meanwhile, user @ballardiangorse reassured others: “It’s only being removed from Netflix UK and has a good chance of moving to BBC iPlayer. Fewer people will see it that way (presumably), but it’s probably safer in the BBC domain.”

And @AngryRedHead86 shared: “It’s good that Criterion added this one to the collection.”

The Power of the Dog can be watched on Netflix UK until August 18, and is available on Blu-ray.
