The case became Indonesia's most famous and publicised murder as the ruling was even televised and watched by millions of Indonesians.
Jessica Wongso, an Indonesian-born permanent Australian resident was sentenced to 20 years in prison when she was found guilty of the premeditated murder of her best friend Mirna.
The pair of young women had studied together at Sydney's design college Billy Blue and had been very close.
At the end of their studies, Jessica remained in Australia where she worked as a graphic designer at Ambulance NSW for seven years.
Meanwhile, Mirna returned to Indonesia.
Jessica Wongso's past seemed to make her susceptible to lashing out as she suffered from a complex mental health history.
She reportedly tried to end her life on four occasions, attempts that resulted in hospitalisation.
Jessica was also involved in a road accident fuelled by alcohol and displayed threatening behaviour towards her colleagues.
One of her former boyfriends also took out an Apprehended Violence Order against her.
During her four-month trial, the prosecution theorised that Jessica may have killed Mirna after the pair had a disagreement regarding a man the former was dating in Australia.
It was believed Jessica set her plan for murder into action after breaking the relationship off.
But the trial was deemed highly controversial due to the presence of expert witnesses without any direct evidence of Jessica's guilt.
