Daniel Craig’s bowed out as James Bond spectacularly in No Time To Die after an 18 month delay for his fifth and final 007 movie. It’s been 17 years since the last round of auditions for Casino Royale, when the outgoing star beat Henry Cavill to the role and producers are now gearing up for the secretive process once again.

Pierce Brosnan’s GoldenEye rebooted Bond for the post-Cold War world and Craig’s Casino Royale for the post-9/11 geo-political climate.

In 2022, coming out of a pandemic and with war once again raging in Europe for the first time since the Second World War, there’s certainly a new world forming for the next 007.

And let’s not forget that the new Bond star has the serious challenge of re-energising the franchise after they actually killed their character off for the first time in 60 years.

Obviously, Bond 26 will be set in another reality of the 007 multiverse where he didn’t die, but just what will be in-store?

Speaking with Variety, Bond producer Barbara Broccoli teased: “It’s an evolution. Bond is evolving just as men are evolving. I don’t know who’s evolving at a faster pace.”

Casino Royale introduced fans to a 007 in touch with his emotions, unafraid to show his tears, so presumably more of that will be coming along the way.

Whatever the case, the EON Productions boss admits of the casting: “It’s going to be a couple of years off.” But she does have a non-negotiable for whichever man (yes she’ll only audition men) takes up the Licence to Kill next.

Broccoli asserted: “And when we cast Bond, it’s a 10-12 year commitment.  A lot of people think, ‘Oh yeah, it’d be fun to do one. Well. That ain’t gonna work. That’s why, when people go, ‘Oh, who are you going to get?’ it’s not just about casting an actor for a film. It’s about a reinvention, and ‘Where are we taking it? What do we want to do with the character?’ And then, once we figure that out, who’s the right person for that particular reinvention?”

In previous interviews, Broccoli has shared how they need to work out if the next Bond reboot will be gritty like Craig’s era or lighter in tone like Roger Moore. In the meantime, the 60th anniversary of the 007 franchise is celebrated on October 5, 2022, marking the release of Sean Connery’s Dr No.

A new documentary on Bond themes called The Sound of 007 will be released that day on Amazon Prime, alongside a recording of a special concert at the Royal Albert Hall the night before with Dame Shirley Bassey and more.
