This weekend, the Welsh star Luke Evans is singing on BBC’s talent show Strictly Come Dancing. The performer is a jack of all trades, as he has not only made waves in the music industry with his solo career but has become a household name with his acting prowess. But, for the longest time, he has been an extremely viable replacement for James Bond actor Daniel Craig, who stepped down from the role last year.
In a recent interview, Evans spoke candidly about what he loved about Craig’s performance as 007.
In particular, he praised the character’s progression from womaniser to human character. The Lord of the Rings star said: “We’re not in the Roger Moore [era] where he sleeps with five women per film, that’s not really what he’s about anymore… I think people are more interested in the spectacle, the story.”
This theory was demonstrated in the final moments of No Time To Die, when Craig’s 007 sacrificed himself to save his partner, Madeleine Swann, and their daughter, Mathilde.
Evans is a self-confessed fan of the series and praised Craig’s era to no end. He once noted: “It’s huge. What are they gonna do next? They’re so fantastic, I love the movies and whoever gets the role will have very big shoes to fill.”
He himself has been very vocal in the past about how he would “jump at the chance” to become the next James Bond.
The character is due for an upheaval in his next iteration, and Evans believes he could bring a new flavour to the character.

Evans – who is gay – also theorised that his sexuality, and the sexuality of Bond, would ultimately not matter to fans of the franchise.
He said: “I don’t know what the current temperature is with audiences, whether they care enough to worry about what James Bond does in the bedroom.”
Evans has previously defended his own career and pointed out how he has played all kinds of characters of different sexualities over the years.
He explained: “[My sexuality] hasn’t had any impact on any of the roles I’ve played, my slate is so diverse, so varied in such a brilliant way. I’ve played everything and no one seems to have a problem with that. And also Bond has changed.”
At the time of writing, Evans is not within the group of actors topping the Bond odds from Ladbrokes.
He is currently 20/1 on claiming the 007 role, behind some major names.
At the top of the list is Netflix heartthrob Regé-Jean Page, who has a staggering 11/4 on becoming the new-and-improved James Bond.
However, the British-Zimbabwean actor has himself said that rumours of him becoming 007 are nothing more than “flattery”.
Meanwhile, The Witcher actor Henry Cavill is close behind Page with an incredible 3/1.
Considering Cavill previously went up against Craig for the role of James Bond before Casino Royale was released, he could certainly be looking to claim it once again.
However, with his contract now renewed by Warner Bros to play Superman once again, he may not have enough time to embody the spy.
