The former The One Show host annually leads the relay-style bike ride from one end of the country to the other to raise money for Children in Need. With the weather turning and autumn settling in, it’s once again time for the presenter to don his bike cycling gear and prepare for the gruelling task. However, opening up about the difficulties on Wednesday’s BBC Breakfast, the 44-year-old gave away a few too many details and left Sally Nugent and Jon Kay horrified while describing his injuries.

Talking about getting ready for the charity event, Matt explained: “I don’t do any training for this, and I literally sit on the bike at the start and I just talk all day long.

“And then suddenly we get to the end of the day and I’m like, ‘Oh right, okay we banged out 40 miles, great – let’s do it again tomorrow.’

“And that’s how it rolls, but that’s part of the magic of it that you just get on there and go for it.”

“And I guess what happens is everyone else keeps you going,” Sally commented.

“Yes, without a doubt,” the Countryfile regular replied. “It’s the support, it really is.

“People are out on the streets, and you’re more than welcome to come and join us on the route.”

Turning to BBC viewers, Matt continued: “But please get out there, please support, and again just show your respect.”

Later, he added: “The WhatsApp group is already pinging, they’re all watching!

“They should already be on the exercise bikes because this is the time of day you need to be banging out the miles.”

“Says the man who’s doing no training!” Jon Kay pointed out, adding: “Don’t listen to Matt Baker!”

The presenter added: “You must ache at the end of the week, though.”

“Honestly, my backside at the end of the week is quite something…” Matt admitted.

Taken aback, Sally responded: “Oh dear, Matt!” before he provided more details on the unfortunate injury.

“But we have medical teams for the riders, but sometimes I need it as well,” he remarked.

“For your backside!” Jon laughed, to which Matt added: “Yeah, leg massages and what have you.”

He went on: “There’s quite a few secrets, though. I’ve got Elizabeth Arden eight-hour cream which is like a face cream.”

“Go on, let me write this down,” Sally quipped, expecting some face care tips.

“It’s amazing what it can do… for your backside,” Matt commented.

Horrified, Sally asked: “On your bottom? Is that what you’re doing?!” while Jon joked about Matt’s brand name-drop.

“I think you’ve just secured yourself a lifetime supply,” he stated as Matt laughed.

“You’re sitting very comfortably there this morning, Matt,” the presenter pointed out.

“And cushions, extra cushioning surely?” Sally asked, but was surprised by Matt’s answer.

“No, it’s better to have a harder seat,” he explained, to which Sally gasped: “No!”

“And don’t have too many layers because they rub,” the expert continued.

“Honestly, I’m so experienced in the world of not training and then doing like hundreds of miles!”

“Let’s get back to the route, and away from your bum,” Jon remarked.

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays from 6am on BBC One.
