Outlander: Is Claire being watched by Jamie’s ghost?
Starz’s hit series Outlander will finally return to screens in June after almost a year since season six’s cliffhanger ending. As fans await the premiere, many have tried to decipher a major flaw in Roger MacKenzie’s (played by Richard Rankin) time-travelling abilities.
Outlander follows the adventures of Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) after she was mysteriously transported from 1945 to 1743.
As she tries to make her way back to her husband Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies), the WWI nurse falls in love with Scottish highlander Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan).
When she eventually returned to the future, Frank happily welcomed Claire back, even with her pregnancy.
20 years later, Frank died, which further motivated Claire to go back and find her true love.
With her daughter Brianna Fraser (Sophie Skelton) back in the future and falling in love with Roger, she learned a huge fire would eventually kill her parents.
As a result, Brianna ventured to the past to warn Jamie and Claire, even after their brief break-up, a heartbroken Roger followed after Brianna.
However, fans noticed Roger was able to easily travel through the stones and questioned how he knew this was possible.
Taking to an Outlander fan page, Redditor u/Smarpar wrote: “ How does Roger know he can travel through the stones?”
They added: “I know that he’s Geillis’ descendant and that’s why he’s able to, but how did he know he could?
“Brianna went and then he follows her but I don’t remember when he finds out his ancestry and that he could do that too.”
Throughout the series, viewers have learned only those related to time-travellers can inherit the ability.
This is why Jemmy MacKenzie (Matthew Adair) was able to briefly disappear through time with his parents, Brianna and Roger in the season five finale.

In the comments, other fans responded with explanations, including u/Not-even-yanan, who shared: “He heard the buzzing at the stones with Brianna and Claire.
“When they watched Gillian go through the stones, I think he could only assume that he could too, seeing as all the necessary components were the same for Claire and Brianna.”
u/bobweaver692 added: “Claire tells him about his ancestry before they search for Geillis/Jillian in 1968. Not sure when/if they are sure it is an inherited trait.”
While u/LaneCommander added: “He learned his ancestry the evening Claire told Brianna and him about her time travelling.”
Another fan u/Lady_DubhBlosso, recalled: “Claire also specified at some point before returning alone that Gilly was his ancestor so he could possibly also have that trait.
“It was confirmed when they tried to stop her and got too close.”
As Roger was eventually able to reunite with Brianna and settle down with her in the past, the young family had trouble returning to the future.
Although they had travelled through time before, the trio briefly disappeared and then confusingly re-emerged in the same spot.
Even though they had all they needed to go through the stones, their inability to do so remains a major mystery in the series.
Outlander season 7 premieres Friday, June 16 on Starz in the USA and Lionsgate+ via Prime Video in the UK.
