BBC Breakfast shake-up as two hosts missing – but replaced by much-loved stars

BBC Breakfast was hit with a major shake-up as two main presenters were absent from the show on Tuesday (July 18).

The hit morning programme returned for its second instalment of the week, but things were looking rather different to normal.

From Monday to Wednesday each week, Sally Nugent and Jon Kay team up to present viewers with the top headlines of the day.

But today, much-loved star Ben Thompson stepped in for Jon, who revealed last week that he was taking an extended break to enjoy a holiday with his family.

Taking to his Twitter account on July 9, he wrote: “Enjoying some extra sleep and long-planned annual leave with the family, so no need to set my alarm clock tomorrow morning".

But fans don't need to worry as Jon confirmed it wouldn't be long until he returned, adding: "Back on the red sofa with my BBC Breakfast family in Salford in two weeks’ time."

As expected, fans of BBC Breakfast had plenty to say about Jon's absence, with many admitting they were imminently waiting for his return.

“Looking forward to seeing you back in two weeks' time,” said one viewer.

Another added: “Enjoy you time off, you and sally are great together. Look forward to seeing back in the mornings!”

"Have a lovely holiday. You will be missed, see you on my tv in a couple of weeks," echoed a third fan.

While a fourth person chipped in: "Enjoy! We’ll miss you though."

Jon wasn't the only familiar face missing from the studio on Tuesday, as meteorologist Carol Kirkwood was also absent.

The 60-year-old is a fan favourite amongst viewers, but they were instead greeted by Matt Taylor who shared the latest weather updates with viewers across the country.

The 47-year-old, who is also a much-loved part of the show, returned to the update fans on the extreme high temperatures which have soared through the European mainland over the past few days.

It's a completely different story for the UK however, with the presenter revealing that there is no chance of the warm weather coming back before the end of this month.
