Paul O’Grady forced to return fostered dog to Battersea
In the final series of his ITV show, Paul O’Grady: For the Love of Dogs, the late actor is seen falling in love with Newfoundland Peggy. The pooch has to have a three hour operation to repair her back legs and Paul explains he’d love to adopt her but sadly has no room. He breaks down in tears when he leaves Battersea Dogs and Cats Home as Peggy whines for him to stay.
The final series of For the Love of Dogs will begin next week and give ITV viewers a chance to see Paul’s final time at the shelter.
The actor and presenter, who died last month at the age of 67, had already adopted Chihuahua-Jack Russell cross Eddie, Shih Tzu Boycie, Maltese Conchita, mongrels Arfur and Nancy, and a dachshund called Sausage.
He explained he had hoped to add Peggy to his home but had “no room at the inn”.
Peggy had a three-and-a-half hour operation at the Royal Veterinary College before Paul and a team at Battersea helped her with eights weeks of physio.
Peggy also have to have hydrotherapy and assisted walks in a support harness.
After the operation and therapy, Peggy was ready to be rehomed and Paul was sad not to be able to take her with him.
“Oh dear, I wish I was ready for you, Peggy, but I am afraid I can’t do it this time, there is just no room at the inn,” he told the pooch.
“Peggy, it’s been a real privilege meeting you, it’s not every day you get to meet a special dog like you.
“You are very beautiful. It’s been lovely knowing you, take it easy, Peggy.”
As Paul prepared to leave Battersea, Peggy is visibly distressed to be saying goodbye as she starts whining.
Getting choked up, Paul tells her: “Don’t start, Peggy please. I’m going to get a job on the railways. It’s too hard to say goodbye.”
Thankfully the presenter was told Peggy had been adopted by a family who had fallen in love with her.
“She steals the heart of everyone she meets and I am head over heels,” Paul tells viewers.
The synopsis for the episode reads: “This week Paul falls head over heels with a gorgeous Newfoundland who needs major life changing surgery on her back legs.
