Gemma Winter (Dolly-Rose Campbell) is determined to help Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) out in upcoming Coronation Street episodes as a fundraiser gets underway.
The idea that Gemma has developed is a chilli eating competition, which happened after Bernie (Jane Hazlegrove) was cutting chillis for dinner and ended up getting some in her eyes.
Gemma and Bernie are aiming to raise enough money to put towards some motor neurone disease equipment for Paul and in this new video, preparation for the competition gets underway.
It’s Dev (Jimmi Harkishin), Chesney (Sam Aston) and Shona (Julia Goulding) who decide to take part but while Gemma gets the crowd excited, Paul can’t help feeling a little uncomfortable about the event.
‘Paul finds the whole thing really awkward’, Peter Ash told us, reflecting on his character’
‘He doesn’t like feeling pitied or being the centre of attention at something like this. He does understand that everyone’s doing it because they want to help and they love him, but he doesn’t feel right about it. And as nice as it is to see everyone there helping him out, it does remind of what he’s been dealt, and the fact that he might not be there that much longer.’
As they return home after raising £800, Billy (Daniel Brocklebank) and Bernie end up in a heated discussion about religion and crystal therapy.
‘Billy has suggested a baptism, but Paul’s not feeling that at all’, Peter explained.
‘Then there’s Bernie’s side, with her spiritual healing that she likes to go on about. He’s got the pair of them clashing over their beliefs and it all gets a bit much. He feels they are both trying to force their own belief onto him, and Paul doesn’t want any of it.
‘There’s a bit of a heated argument where he snaps and tells them just leave him alone, he can do without this. He then heads off and goes AWOL for the night…’.
But will Paul end up regretting getting drunk and bumping into Zac, an old love interest?
