Piers Morgan’s wife Celia Walden has explained the six-week ‘sabbatical’ the pair took, spending time away from each other, and claimed that it has actually been ‘good’ for their marriage.
Celia, who has been married to Piers since 2010, appeared on Lorraine this morning, and spoke to stand-in host Christine Lampard about how their sabbatical worked.
The 46-year-old journalist revealed that their time apart, which came after spending all their time together due to the pandemic lockdowns, had been ‘very good for both’ of them.
She began by joking: ‘I have to say I did enjoy all the predictable Twitter responses,’ in reference to trolls commenting on their marriage.
Celia continued: ‘He enjoyed it too, it wasn’t just me. It was very good for both of us,’ before confirming: ‘We didn’t have problems before, it was nothing like that, but it’s been a long pandemic hasn’t it.’
Referring to an article in which she explained the sabbatical, Celia said: ‘I described it in the piece as like rebooting your computer, where sometimes, it’s not that there’s anything in particular that’s wrong, but it grinds to a bit of a halt, and you reboot it and suddenly it comes back to life.
‘We had just over five weeks apart over the summer, and to be fair, it was sort of work necessitated because Piers was interviewing serial killers, which he found preferable to being married to me, and I was working in LA, so he was all over.
‘We did message, we didn’t have many phone calls, but we did message, and I just found it so exciting when we saw each other again, it felt like the early days of our marriage, or even the early days of dating and I loved that.’
Christine replied: ‘You start to realise on the things you’ve missed as opposed to focusing on the things that maybe annoy you,’ before adding that Celia and Piers must have entered the sabbatical from a ‘strong place’ to begin with.
‘If you have any problem with your marriage, don’t do it,’ Celia warned, adding: ‘It doesn’t always make the heart grow fonder does it, if you’re in a perilous place for whatever reason.’
While Piers and Celia may have lived separately for a few weeks, she admitted she wouldn’t have been able to stay away from their daughter for that long.
The pair have one child together, 10-year-old Elise, who they welcomed in 2011.
Piers also has three children from his previous marriage to Marion Shalloe, Spencer, 27, Stanley, 23, and Albert, 20.
Celia added: ‘Well my daughter stayed with me, because I don’t think I can be away from her for that long. Piers was fine but not her and I think that worked out very nicely.’
She continued: ‘I wouldn’t forceably take away a child from their father but it was a work necessity and she spoke to him a lot more than I did.’
She also joked that she could do another sabbatical after the ‘nightmare’ of Christmas, saying: ‘Nobody wants to be near their family in January, so possibly by February I’ll be ready for another one, but only for a fortnight or a week.’
Speaking about them reuniting after the time apart, she added: ‘It was really quite exciting, it was almost like being slightly polite with each other, but also, I don’t know if this happens with you and Frank, but I did find during the pandemic I was boring myself, because nothing had happened I would find myself telling the same anecdote twice and it wasn’t even funny the first time, so this time […] neither of us could stop talking.’
She jokingly added: ‘He’s very pleased to be back, men do like their wives to be around a lot of the time, that’s a huge generalisation but I’m assuming they do.’
Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV.
