Royal writer Katie Nicholl spoke with Christine Lampard during Thursday’s Lorraine about her upcoming book, which she admitted took her a year to write. The book titled, The New Royals looks at Queen Elizabeth II’s 70-year reign up until the moment she died. However, during her chat with the ITV host, Katie spoke about how the Queen was surprised about how “hands-on” Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, are with their three children, Prince Louis, Prince George and Princess Charlotte.
“It was written over the course of about a year,” Katie began. “And obviously with the twilight of the Queen’s reign being very much in mind.
“So I wanted it to be Queen Elizabeth’s legacy because her legacy is remarkable.
“And of course, the new Royals… what is the monarchy going to look like under King Charles III.
“And of course, that promise of the next generation with the Cambridge’s, and as they are now the Wales’.
“So I really wanted it to be a sort of book that looked at all of that, so was an enormous undertaking.
“Previously, all of my books have been biographies about your one member of the Royal Family.”
“So it was quite a daunting task,” she admitted before adding: “But I think you come away with a really good understanding of not just the Queen’s reign, but what the future looks like and it’s a very positive future, I think, for the future of the Royal Family.”
Christine went on to point out how the dynamic of the Royal Family has changed since the Queen died.
She said: “You do believe that Charles and certainly William have become really close, closer than ever.”
“I think they absolutely have,” Katie replied. “I think that’s a combination of things.
“With Charles preparing for his reign, and one of the things I say in the book is that he sort of already has the first five-year plan in place ready to go.
“And I think now that the royal mourning period is over, we’re going to see him really hit the ground running and you know, really impress us with what he’s going through.”
Discussing Prince William’s relationship with his father, the author continued: “What I thought was so interesting, having done the book on William and Harry back in 2010.
“It was apparent that there were some tensions in the relationship between father and son to how close they are now.
“They holiday together, they speak on the phone, I’m told almost every day and I think what’s so reassuring when you look at the future of the monarchy is that they’re on the same page.”
Turning her attention to Prince William and Kate Middleton’s parenting, Katie lifted the lid on what goes on behind closed doors.
Christine asked the royal expert about how the Queen was reportedly “baffled” over the fact the couple refused to hire a nanny to help them.
“The Queen found it fascinating that they never hired a nanny in the first instance because Kate and William wanted to be hands-on parents,” she told the host before adding: “And they are hands-on parents.
“I mean even today, the whole sort of school routine is very much their priority.
“And if William or Kate can sort of make it work in their schedule so they can do the school run, then that is their priority. They’re incredibly normal and down to earth in that respect.”
“I think it’s a generational thing you know,” she concluded. “The Queen couldn’t understand that they didn’t have an Aanight nurse and a nanny in the first instance, and why Kate would cook the tea when of course, she had a housekeeper and kitchen staff, but they want to make the tea.”
Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV.
