Sink Your Teeth Into ‘Vampire Academy’ Season 1

Vampires are BACK in the culture. Did they ever leave, really? They are immortal, after all. We’ve got The Invitation, Interview With the Vampire, and now, Vampire Academy on Peacock.

Let’s talk about the latter for a hot minute. Are you excited for some YA vampire romance, adventure, and…academia? Here’s everything you need to know about season 1 of Vampire Academy.

Is Vampire Academy like…*that* Vampire Academy??

It sure is! The Peacock series is an adaptation of Richelle Mead’s book series, which was also the basis of the 2014 film starring Zoey Deutch and Sarah Hyland.

This adaptation is in good hands, because the legend known as Julie Plec—aka the woman who adapted The Vampire Diaries for The CW and cocreated The Originals and Legacies. This is Plec’s wheelhouse, so get ready for ALL the juicy vampire young adult drama.

Wait…Vampire Academy isn’t part of the TVD universe, is it?

Nope! The Vampire Academy books and the Vampire Diaries books are by different authors originally. The two worlds have different “vampire rules,” so crossovers would be tricky at best. The Vampire Academy takes place at a fully immersive supernatural school, not a small town with supernatural secrets.

I didn’t read the book—what is Vampire Academy about?

Two friends from opposite sides of the proverbial tracks named Rose and Lissa attend a school called St. Vladimir’s Academy for noble vampires called Moroi and dhampirs (vampire/human hybrids who are trained to protect Moroi). Rose is a dhampir, or guardian, in training, and Lissa is a Moroi princess.

In their world, Moroi are peaceful and humane vampires who take blood from donors…as opposed to the more sinister and classic vampires called Strigoi. Before the events of the first book, the two besties ran away from school and survived using their wits and supernatural powers. They are brought back to school and a spooky mystery unfolds… because of course it does.

Who’s in Vampire Academy on Peacock?

The new series stars Sisi Stringer (Mortal Combat) as Rose Hathaway, Daniela Nieves (Every Witch Way) as Princess Vasilisa “Lissa” Dragomir, Kieron Moore (Sex Education) as Dimitri Belikov, and André Dae Kim (Degrassi: The Next Generation) as Christian Ozera.

Also in the cast are J. August Richards (Angel) as Victor Dashkov, Andrew Liner (Grown-ish) as Mason Ashford, Anita-Joy Uwajeh (Atlanta) as Tatiana Vogel, Mia McKenna-Bruce (Persuasion) as Mia Karp, Rhian Blundell as Meredith, and Jonetta Kaiser as Sonya Karp.

When will Vampire Academy be released?

You can watch the series starting September 15, 2022 on Peacock. Four episodes will be released at once, and then the rest of the season will drop one episode at a time, weekly, from September 22 onward.
