Star Wars actor Mark Hamill ‘retires’ Luke Skywalker after Episode X news

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope trailer

Disney bosses recently announced the next chapter in the Star Wars cinematic universe at the annual Celebration event in London.

Rey Skywalker was confirmed to be returning in one of three new movies, and now fans are convinced this new picture will become Star Wars: Episode X.

Speculation has since increased about whether Mark Hamill will be returning to the franchise as Luke Skywalker once again after he had top billing in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.

However, he has now confirmed he will not be returning.

Speaking to CBS Sunday Morning, the 71-year-old said: “I had my time, and that’s good – but that’s enough.”

It seems as if the iconic Jedi Knight was not going to rule out a return once and for all, however.

When pressed on if he would ever make a comeback to the franchise, he wouldn’t commit.

“Well, you never say never,” he confirmed. “But I just don’t see any reason to, let me put it that way. I mean, they have so many stories to tell, they don’t need Luke anymore.”

While Hamill’s return is currently shrouded in mystery, he previously confirmed his thoughts about the upcoming spin-off movies involving Rey Skywalker.

He was quizzed over whether he would be making a comeback as some sort of Force ghost – much like many characters have done in the past two movies.

“No,” he said. “I don’t have any expectations of that happening.”

Star Wars and Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy ran with the same story.

When asked at the Star Wars Celebration about seeing older Jedis like Luke or Yoda as apparitions once again, she mused: “I don’t know if we’ll spend a lot of time in flashbacks or [on] Force ghosts or things like that.”

“But certainly, the spirit of what [Luke Skywalker] represents to [Rey] is going to be significant,” she added.
