Star Wars fans have been feasting off of the series’ Disney Plus shows in recent years, but almost no updates have been given for the next instalments in the film franchise. Just recently, one upcoming movie was cancelled, but now a new one has taken its place.

A brand new Star Wars film is now in development with Damon Lindelof at its helm, it has been reported.

The unnamed movie is being pioneered by the American screenwriter, who is best known for the Star Trek film reboots and the Watchmen TV show.

Deadline reports Lindelof is co-writing the upcoming Star Wars movie, but details on his script partner are still shrouded in mystery.

Even more exciting for fans of the series is that the movie’s director has also been announced, and they just wrapped up work on an incredibly successful Marvel series.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinov will be directing the upcoming Star Wars movie, the publication reported.

The Pakistani-Canadian star directed two episodes of Ms Marvel, which premiered on Disney Plus throughout the summer.

The prestigious director also won an Academy Award in 2016 for her documentary, A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness

This will be the first Star Wars instalment Obaid-Chinov has fronted, but considering how well-received Ms Marvel was, fans can rest assured the movie is in safe hands.

Obaid-Chinov and Lindelof’s new Star Wars movie will be the first film to hit cinemas since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Since then, the future of the franchise seems to have abandoned cinemas.

In the past year, Disney and Lucasfilm have focussed their efforts on their streaming service, Disney Plus, to release new stories in the Star Wars universe.

Right now, Andor is airing weekly and comes off the back of Obi-Wan Kenobi and The Book of Boba Fett and The Mandalorian.

The only titled Star Wars movie in the pipeline was Rogue Squadron, which was due to be written and directed by Wonder Woman boss Patty Jenkins.

Unfortunately, last month reports hit that the movie had been “removed” from Disney’s movie slate, with further reports that Jenkins had stepped down from the role. While it has not officially been cancelled just yet, its lack of a director and release date don’t leave fans with much hope.

The new Star Wars film does not yet have a release date.

The Star Wars films and TV shows are available to stream on Disney Plus now.
