Stars of hit spin-off series break silence as show is cancelled after just one series | The Sun

STARS of a hit spin-off series have broken their silence following the news their show was cancelled after just one series.

Supernatural's prequel series, The Winchesters, has not been renewed for a second season.

The fantasy drama – which UK viewers could watch with the aid of a VPN – followed the love story between Mary Campbell (Meg Donnelly) and John Winchester (Drake Rodger).

The couple would eventually go on to parent the demon-hunting brothers of the original series.

The show's network, The CW – which also aired the show on its website and app – decided not to renew it as it focuses more on low-cost programming and unscripted series.

Supernatural co-star Jensen Ackles served as executive producer and narrator on The Winchesters, and he has now confirmed that hopes of finding a new home for the show were slim.

He tweeted: "To all of you who watched, followed, and supported this story, THANK YOU. And to all those who brought this show to life… I couldn’t be more proud of what we all did together."

Referencing the ongoing writer's strike in America, he continued: "But as they say… timing is everything. With a massive Network shift coupled with an industry strike… welp… that’s some unfortunate timing.

"Sleep well dear, Winchesters… until we meet again. Somewhere down the road."

Fellow Supernatural alum Misha Collins also took to social media to comment on the show's premature end, having previously expressed an interest in reprising his role of Castiel for the series.
