Steph McGovern opens up on ruling out a spot on Strictly Come Dancing

Steph McGovern has opened up about why she has never agreed to sign up for Strictly Come Dancing ahead of the BBC show returning for a new season this autumn.

In a new interview with Prima Magazine, the Channel 4 host shared: “I’d love to be a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing, but it’s never been the right time to do it.

“I can’t do it now because I have the show and I don’t want to be away from my daughter, but I’m hoping it will still be going in years to come.”

Steph, 41, has a three-year-old daughter but she has decided to keep her name out of the spotlight.

Sharing a snippet of information about her home life, Steph added: “Our house is really fun, and full of love and laughter. We don’t take ourselves too seriously.

“We especially love our kitchen discos. I film at lunchtime, so I get to take my daughter to and from nursery every day, which is unbelievably amazing.

“Then, when we get home, I purposely try not to look at my phone until she’s in bed.

“We’ll just whack some music on and dance about for a bit. She also loves playing ‘imaginary zoo’ at the moment.”

Steph has also kept her girlfriend’s name out of the public eye, telling Huff Post: “I was never asked if I’m honest.

“I think because I didn’t necessarily look like a gay woman I don’t think people ever bothered to ask me.

“And so my kind of coming out was being pregnant because obviously everyone then asked questions.

“Also, I grew up in the era where, although there weren’t that many gay women on telly, I felt like there were loads around me in my social setting, so I didn’t feel like I needed to do a big thing of, ‘Hello I am gay.'”

Strictly Come Dancing is returning for an all-new season later this year, and a host of celebrities are rumoured to be taking part.

They include Love Island’s Zara McDermott as well as television legends Les Dennis and Angela Rippon.

The official line-up is set to be announced by BBC bosses later this summer.
