It wouldn’t be Strictly Come Dancing without the show’s iconic movie week, and week 3 of the contest did not disappoint as the remaining couples took to the floor to perform a selection of Hollywood inspired dances.
From a Lion King inspired Samba, right through to an emotional Cha Cha Cha inspired by Flashdance, there was plenty of colour, energy and emotion in each of Saturday’s performances.
However it was Will Mellor ’s performance with partner Nancy Xu that got many fans talking, as the toe tapping duo performed a highly sensual American Smooth to Dirty Dancing track Cry to Me.
Channelling Patrick Swayze in a high waisted black trouser and fitted white shirt, Will dazzled the judges and audience alike with his performance, which fittingly kicked off with Nancy carrying a watermelon just like in the movie.
The dance earned the pair an impressive combined score of 33 overall from the judging panel.
Fans at home also couldn’t get enough of the performance, with many taking to social media to praise the couple of their impressive performance, with several even dubbing it their favourite yet, in all 20 series of the show.
“Will and Nancy. I love partnership. Your chemistry is on point. Will your routine was full of style and so sensual. Nancy, stunning choreography. Will and Nancy you have to Win.,” gushed one fan shortly after the performance.
Another fan echoed similar sentiments as they wrote: “Omg -I don’t know why, but I think that’s got to be one of my top #strictly performances ever. Will Mellor and Nancy’s Dirty Dancing routine really tugged at my heartstrings … loved it and Nancy’s costume was perfection.”
A third fan also weighed in as they confessed: “Will Mellor getting everyone hot under the collar tonight.”
A fourth also then added “I didn't have developing a crush on Will Mellor on my 2022 bingo card, but here we are.”
While another commented simply: “Will Mellor feels like he’s ticking all of the right boxes to be a potential #Strictly winner. Appeals to exactly the right audience, seems genuinely lovely and can actually dance."
Several fans were even convinced that he deserved to be marked higher for the performance, as they commented: “Surprised Will didn't get higher scores for that one. Thought it was a cracker of a routine.”
There were also a few direct references to Dirty Dancing from fans online too, as one fan cheekily wrote: “Nobody puts Will in the corner.”
In a moment of high praise indeed, another even compared him to the late Patrick Swayze directly, as they excitedly wrote: “Was it Will, or was it Patrick? Soooo in character and excellent moves! Brilliant!”
Will it be enough to secure him a place in next week’s show?
Viewers will have to tune in to Strictly Come Dancing tomorrow on BBC One to find out.
