Strictlys Gemma Atkinson addresses impossible decision after traumatic birth

Gemma Atkinson shows her postpartum bump

Gemma Atkinson has opened up about the “traumatic” birth of her first child, Mia, who is now four, after recently welcoming her second baby with partner Gorka Marquez last month.

The former Hollyoaks and Emmerdale star met Strictly Come Dancing professional dancer Gorka when the two appeared on the 2017 series.

Gemma was partnered with Aljaž Škorjanec on the show and made it all the way to the final but she and Gorka hit it off, with them officially announcing their relationship on Valentine’s Day the following year.

In their new reality docu-series, Gemma and Gorka: Behind The Lens, the actress gets candid about her daughter Mia’s birth.

The couple welcomed their first child in July of 2019 but it wasn’t the smoothest of deliveries.

In an episode of Gemma and Gorka: Behind The Lens, a visibly pregnant Gemma announced: “Mia’s birth was scary.

“It ended in emergency c-section and postpartum haemorrhage. The staff at this hospital genuinely saved both our lives.”

Gemma explained because of this experience her pregnancy was “deemed as high risk,” which was “a shock”.

Gorka then recalled his take on Mia’s arrival: “When Mia was born, we had a bit of a traumatic birth.”

He detailed the fact that despite being in labour Gemma “wasn’t having any contractions,” while Mia’s heart rate dropped to a low and “quite dangerous” level.

He added: “So I remember they pressed a button and alarms went off, doctors running in, nurses, everywhere. Six minutes was the time cap for delivering Mia.”

What was already a serious condition became even more high-risk for the couple when Gemma was given a blood transfusion form and asked who should be saved; Gemma or the baby.

Gemma continued: “With both mine and Mia’s life at risk, the decision was made for an emergency Caesarean section.”

Thankfully everything went to plan and Gemma safely delivered their first child but it did have an impact on her birth plan for her second baby.

After Gemma’s waters broke and she went into labour with son Thiago last month, she was “given the choice of the artificial hormone to induce labour again or a section,” after her contractions stopped again.

Taking to her Instagram, Gemma revealed: “This time was SO much more relaxed. It was actually a wonderful experience and it just so happened that the same surgeon who delivered Mia was on shift. So she delivered Thiago as well.”

Gemma and Gorka: Life Behind the Lens airs on W and UKTV Play on Wednesdays at 8pm.
