Succession’s Kieran Culkin tipped as Emmy favourite ahead of Logan’s funeral

Preview for Succession season 4, episode 9

Succession star Kieran Culkin is heavily tipped to take home the gold at this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards for his performance as Roman Roy.

Culkin, along with his co-stars Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong and Sarah Snook, confirmed he had submitted himself for the lead drama actor category earlier this year.

Despite Cox’s limited screen time, the core cast will all be competing for the top prize, though fans of the hit HBO drama maintain Culkin has been the highlight of the fourth season.

The latest sneak peek at episode nine, Church and State, reveals Roman gearing up to perform an emotional speech at the funeral for his father, Logan (Cox).

Roman appears ready to step into his father’s shoes after the historic election last week as he prepares to tell the crowd: “Don’t I, perhaps, remind you of him? Just a little?”

After his powerful confrontation with Lukas Mattson (Alexander Skarsgård), fans are prepared for another stellar performance from Culkin which could just win him his first gong at the Emmys.

YouTuber Juan Vilchez wrote under the trailer: “Kieran is definitely taking that Emmy home after this season ends. He’s been brilliant in every episode.”

Max Gent added: “Whatever monologue Roman has in store when he inevitably goes off script will win Kieran an Emmy.”

On Twitter, @_lmperator wrote: “That Kieran Culkin Emmy is coming I can feel it in my bones.”

“I just have that gut feeling that Kieran Culkin’s performance in the penultimate episode is going to be one we’ll talk about for years to come,” Avery Thompson said.

“Start engraving that Emmy now. ‘Roman the Showman’ is coming.”

@sand_ayyy joked: “At this point, Kieran Culkin doesn’t even deserve just the Emmy.

“He needs more. Give him the Oscar. The Nobel Prize. The key to the city. Give him everything.”

TV journalist Randy Shulman even predicted: “Watching the advance press screener of this week’s Succession and I only have one thing to say: Kieran Culkin is winning an Emmy.”

Succession’s legion of fans is almost unanimously behind Culkin taking the trophy after Strong and Matthew Macfadyen’s wins for seasons two and three.

However, they could face stiff competition from the past year of stunning TV performances.

Also amongst the bookies’ favourites this year are Paddy Considine for House of the Dragon and Pedro Pascal for The Last of Us.

Succession season 4 continues Sundays on HBO in the USA and the following Monday on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK.
