The Diplomat on Netflix is led by Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell

The Diplomat – Official Netflix trailer

The Diplomat will be landing on Netflix today (April 20) with all eight episodes available to binge in one go.

The show follows the new US Ambassador to the UK grappling with her new role as she has to navigate conflicts and international crises alongside balancing this with her marriage to a fellow career diplomat. Express.co.uk had the lowdown on the cast of The Diplomat.

Showrunner Debora Cahn spoke about how the idea for The Diplomat came to her after previously working on Homeland and meeting real-life political and international policy experts including ambassadors.

Cahn said: “The stories they told were breathtaking. They go to every war zone, every crisis zone that’s about to erupt into a war zone. The Foreign Service is the first in and the last out of every disaster in the world, and nobody knows who they are or what they do.”

She went on to say: “It was that combined with the idea of couples who work together. There are a lot of ‘tandem couples’ in the Foreign Service. They meet at work; they’re passionate about what they do, and become equally passionate about each other; and so they decide to spend their lives together. It’s romantic and exciting and intense.”

Adding: “But 10, 15 years later, you’re in a situation where the person you love most is also somebody you’re competing with all the time.”
