Shaun Murphy confronts Dr Han
Twitter users have been bashing a viral clip from the second season of The Good Doctor featuring Freddie Highmore’s Dr Shaun Murphy and Daniel Dae Kim’s Dr Jackson Han.
The scene is taken from the episode Breakdown, in which Dr Murphy confronts Dr Han over why he has been excluded from taking part in a major operation.
In their row, Dr Murphy screams tearfully “I am a surgeon!” whilst Dr Han looks on stoically.
Dr Han believed Dr Murphy’s autism could have jeopardized the procedure, but he was eventually fired in part due to discriminating against his colleague’s disability.
However, the resurfaced scene has caused another wave of backlash against The Good Doctor for its potentially offensive portrayal of autism.
@gapingmaws tweeted: “Really don’t like that ‘I am a surgeon’ clip because it’s like… this is what they think of autistic people.
“A sliding scale between that and Sheldon [Cooper (Jim Parsons) from The Big Bang Theory].”
@joblessthursday said the series has “set back the public perception of autism by an extra 500 years.”
@MagDaVeloRaptr said: “I can’t tell which is the worst autistic rep in media. This, the kid from the Predator movie, or Sheldon.
“All depictions that led to everyone having misguided expectations for me and when I didn’t meet those I was deemed infantile and worthless.”

“I didn’t know what this show was until after I memed on it [sic],” @TopBrickBoss said.
“I just thought it was some over-dramatic scene where the guy lost his medical license. THIS CHARACTER IS MEANT TO BE AUTISTIC???
“I watched other clips too. Holy f**k this is bad lmaoooo, I can name like 1500000 other ‘autistic-coded’ characters who are better [sic].”
“This is probably one of the worst portrayals of autistic people out there tbh,” @TheVenusDarling said. “It’s up there with the Mary MacDonald cameo in Grey’s Anatomy.
“Many of us are so good at masking we only got diagnosed late in life. I wish people would stop stereotyping autistics like this.”
And @TrnsShenanigans tweeted: “This show is hilariously bad like the entire show is like this.”
Several memes and parody videos have already been made about the scene after it was posted to Twitter on Sunday.
Despite the backlash, The Good Doctor has remained one of the biggest network shows in the US and has recently been renewed for a seventh season.
A spin-off following a young lawyer with OCD, Joni DeGroot (Kennedy McMann), has also been greenlit following a successful backdoor pilot this year.
The Good Doctor airs on ABC in the USA. A UK release date has yet to be announced.
