Based on the bestselling novel by Matthew Quirk, The Night Agent has quickly become one of Netflix’s biggest hits of the year after debuting on Thursday. While sequel seasons are all but inevitable, Quirk has yet to publish a follow-up novel, giving showrunner Shawn Ryan free rein to take the second outing in a completely different direction.

Ryan has confirmed agent Peter Sutherland (played by Gabriel Basso) will take on a brand new mission if The Night Agent is picked up for a second season.

In the 10-part drama’s first outing, Sutherland’s job at the White House is threatened when he stumbles upon a vast conspiracy about a mole at the top of the US government.

CEO Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan) aids his hunt for the truth, but is also under threat from her aunt and uncle’s murderers.

In addition to the two leads, TV and film stars Eve Harlow, DB Woodside, Hong Chau and Robert Patrick make up the main cast.

However, some of the show’s biggest names may or may not be returning if Netflix decides to continue the already popular thriller.

“Listen, until there is a season two picked up, the writers and I aren’t getting paid to figure that out until it becomes official in some way,” the showrunner admitted.

“I certainly have some ideas; I probably want to keep those to myself until the time comes.”

For the time being, plans for a second season won’t start to take shape until the streamer can be sure it’s got another surefire hit on their hands.

Even so, it’s hard to argue with The Night Agent’s position on the charts, so Ryan and the writers may have to start brainstorming sooner rather than later.

When asked if season two would be “completely different”, he confirmed: “The initial pitch for this show that we sold to Netflix was that each season would tell its own, mostly self-enclosed, a beginning, middle and end story.

“Any future seasons would include a few but not most of the characters that we saw in the previous season.”

The show’s biggest names may not return for a follow-up, although fans should be able to rest assured that leading man Basso will be back as agent Sutherland.

Unfortunately, there’s currently no source material for Ryan to build upon just yet, so it’s still anyone’s guess what Sutherland could uncover if and when the show returns.

“That was the original plan; I think it’s still a pretty solid plan,” he told Deadline.

“To me it was important. I don’t want to tell this specific story over five seasons, I want to tell this specific story in one season and give some satisfaction to the audience that they see how things turn out.

“They learn what the truth is about Peter’s father, they learn what the conspiracy was. You can feel a sense of completion.

“If we are successful enough that Netflix wants more seasons, I think there’d be a whole new world in which you would see a limited number of characters from this current season going into that.

“But that’s something that I’d have to sit down with the writers and have it all figured out.”

Ryan is making no solid plans or promises just yet but, hopefully, Netflix subscribers’ appetite for gripping political thrillers will ensure the streamer gives a thumbs up to season two very soon.

The Night Agent is available to stream on Netflix.
