Those tuned into Tuesday’s instalment of the ITV show saw Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary discussing warnings of possible blackouts throughout the winter after the National Grid gave more details of potential power cuts in January if there are gas shortages. Some This Morning viewers deemed the coverage as unnecessary and accused the presenters of “scaremongering” viewers, and one even argued the show should be removed from TV.
It comes as the National Grid chief warned blackouts could be imposed during the “deepest and darkest evenings”.
The company initially warned the public earlier this month but has now provided a potential timeframe.
With Nick Ferrari and Camilla Tominey joining the show for the discussion, Alison explained to viewers: “Next story – Britons told to prepare for three-hour blackouts.”
She added: “Now, this is very worrying but obviously we don’t want to worry people.
“This is something that could happen – we could face three-hour rolling blackouts between 4pm and 7pm – the most busy time when you are cooking dinner, you know, in January and February if gas stocks run low, the head of the National Grid has claimed.”
The presenter added: “Apparently, this is the first time since the warning that there has been an explicit discussion of what time blackouts may take place.”
Turning to Nick, she asked: “So, Nick, should we worry?”
“Not yet,” the 63-year-old replied. “But you should be aware and keep an eye on it.
“I am of an age, none of you three are, of an age where we had blackouts in the past and we had to do our homework by candlelight.
“I have to tell you, it was some of the best homework I ever turned in! But I also remind you there’s a reason possibly to be cheerful.
“Because nine months after those blackouts, which used to come on at 10 o’clock at night, there was suddenly a baby boom.
“So if you’ve got no power, there are other things you can do to get through the afternoon or evening!”
Not everyone found the discussion amusing though, and some viewers were quick to complain about the segment.
Twitter user David wrote: “#ThisMorning eh this is very worrying but we don’t want to worry you the viewer. Mmmhhhhh. It’s very worrying how stupid some people are who are on telly.”
@SmokeyToes76 penned: “Blackouts??? What f*in century is this?? #ThisMorning.”
Samantha fumed: “#ThisMorning seriously needs to be taken off air!”
Jill Beddoes demanded: “STOP with the black out warnings. It’s a worst-case scenario and very very unlikely to happen. Stop scaremongering. #thismorning.”
“‘This is very worrying…but we don’t want to worry people’ This show. #thismorning,” Joe shared, followed by mind-blown emojis.
@DavidMackayy added: “The blackouts are an old story Alison, we know it’s a possibility and not a guarantee #thismorning.” (sic)
