Top Boy season 3 saw Saffron Hocking leave as Lauryn

Top Boy: Season 3 official trailer on Netflix

WARNING: This article contains major spoilers from Top Boy season three.

Top Boy has come to an end but why did Saffron Hocking leave the show as Lauryn?

The drug drama has concluded on Netflix with season three released in full on Thursday, September 7, with the first two episodes leaving their mark.

Jaq’s (played by Jasmine Jobson) sister Lauryn (Saffron Hocking) left an abusive relationship in season two and ended up killing Curtis (Howard Charles), her son’s father.

Fast-forward to series three and she was getting used to being a mum and recovering from her horrific ordeal.

Things seemed to be improving for Lauryn but she still chose to take drugs to take the edge off so fans were distraught when they saw she had died in the bath after taking something.

Why did Saffron Hocking leave Top Boy?

An official reason as to why actress Saffron Hocking left Top Boy hasn’t been given but her character’s death acted as a catalyst in the drama.

Lauryn’s demise led to Jaq going on a crusade and stealing drugs from Sully (Kane “Kano” Robinson) to get them off the streets and prevent anyone else from being killed by them.

But when Jaq did decide to return the drugs to him, Dushane (Ashley Walters) stole them from her, in a desperate attempt to use them to flee the country and go on the run after killing Jeffrey (Shaun Dingwall).

So without Lauryn dying, a lot of the action that happened in the final couple of episodes wouldn’t have taken place, therefore, it is believed her death was a creative decision.

Hocking hasn’t spoken out about Lauryn’s demise but has previously opened up about the reaction she has received to her domestic abuse storyline in season two.

Now an ambassador of the charity Refuge, Hocking was nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the 2023 BAFTA Awards for her performance.

She told Cosmopolitan: “Accolades are great, but women from all over the world thanking me for embodying their stories is incredible.

“I don’t think I was totally prepared for that.

“I’ve received so many messages from survivors around the world – I took all the time to reply, usually in floods of tears… That meant more than anything coming from my peers in the industry.”

Top Boy season three was announced as the show’s final ever series last year.

It was initially brought to life on Channel 4 but was cancelled after just two seasons.

But thanks to rapper Drake and Netflix, Top Boy was revived in 2019 and reached its unexpected conclusion this week.

Top Boy is available to watch on Netflix.
