Queen Elizabeth II died peacefully at Balmoral Castle, in Scotland, on Thursday afternoon at the age of 96 following a 70-year-reign on the British throne. Broadcasters across the globe announced Her Majesty’s death from 6.30pm BST, and journalist Vanessa Feltz was reduced to tears as she told TalkTV viewers the sombre news.

A tearful Vanessa began: “It is 6.32pm, the day is September 8, 2022, and I am extremely sorry to have to bring you the exceptionally sad news that Her Majesty The Queen has died.

“The news has been confirmed by Buckingham Palace, Her Majesty was 96-year-old and had reigned for 70 years.

The Queen was the nation’s longest-serving monarch and she died surrounded by her family in Balmoral.

Following the announcement, Vanessa said: “It’s overwhelming to have to break the news and to have to contemplate what that means for all of us.”

Her colleague Mike Graham was also emotional and added: “It’s very upsetting as she is the mother we had for such a long time and she’s been a brilliant Head of State.”

Vanessa told Mike: “She has been the most remarkable mainstay for us and she’s been the very emblem of fortitude and of sacrifice and of calm in very difficult times.

“She has been such a loyal wife and grandmother, and great grandmother, and just somebody that we have looked on as a beacon and great adornment to all our lives.”

Many listeners felt Vanessa and Mike encapsulated people’s thoughts around the world as they paid tribute to the Queen.

Alla penned on Twitter: “Beautiful words and I share your emotions.”

Scott said: “Vanessa you have given me tears. You have been a most beautiful broadcaster today thank you.”

Steven added: “I’m not surprised Vanessa is upset, I can’t imagine having to break that news to so many people.”

@Badboy5552 commented: “You did wonderfully to hold yourself together. Very well done. Heartfelt and respectful, well done.”

Sez remarked: “Reported with dignity and genuine emotion, thank you @vanessafeltz.”

A statement has been issued by the Royal Family on behalf of Charles, the new King.

The 73-year-old wrote: “The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family.

“We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished sovereign and a much-loved mother.

“I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth and by countless people around the world.

“During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which the Queen was so widely held.”
