It came as the pair discussed a Coronation Street plot on Tuesday’s (October 18) Loose Women which led Ruth to aim a jibe at Coleen, and the two carried on the jokey insults throughout the rest of the show. Previously, it’s been reported the pair don’t see eye to eye, and the interaction led to the presenters addressing the speculated “war” between them.

The soap storyline saw two characters, Tim Metcalfe (played by Joe Duttine) and Aggy Bailey (Lorna Laidlaw) becoming close behind their partners’ backs after he confided in the nurse about a sensitive issue.

After explaining the plotline, Ruth asked Coleen for her thoughts on the topic, which led to a humorous exchange of insults between the two.

Coleen gave her view on the subject and went on to say it was a tricky subject.

“I don’t know, women are funny – I’m funny,” she commented.

“You’re not that funny,” Ruth quipped as the panel laughed. Coleen mocked tears before continuing her point.

“No, I do think it’s a really difficult situation, I really do, and usually one person, whether it’s the man or the woman, can feel a bit different,” she added.

When they discussed the issue of Tim asking Aggy for gift advice for his partner, Coleen explained: “I don’t know, I would rather someone ask you, ‘What do you think Coleen would like?’ than-“

Cutting in with another jibe, Ruth replied: “I’d say a joke book.'”

“You know this is going to be all over the magazines next week,” Coleen laughed. “Because we’re always at war!”

“We are always at war, we have been at war for years!” Ruth replied.

“Actually, it is quite nice to see you being funny,” Coleen hit back at her colleague.

“Touché Coleen, touché,” Ruth responded as Janet Street-Porter quickly added: “I’m going to change the subject now.”

The joke about their “rivalry” comes after publications reported on a behind-the-scenes clash between the two panellists.

ITV bosses strongly denied the claims and the panel has addressed the rumours before.

Back in June, Ruth argued such speculation comes from women “being pitted against one another”.

Speaking to Lorraine Kelly, she commented: “We [the panel] have some heated discussions.

“‘But we don’t fall out, somehow people just love to pit women against women, don’t they?

“We do disagree about things, but then five minutes later we laugh and talk about something else.”

She added: “We’re such a diverse group of women, different age groups, different views and different opinions on things.

“So many times I go on that show, I think one thing and by the end of the discussion I’ve changed my mind.”

Loose Women airs on weekdays from 12.30pm on ITV.
