Having first aired in 1972, ITV’s Emmerdale is one of the longest-running soaps in British TV history.
The soap, which focuses on the day-to-day lives of characters in a fictional village in the Yorkshire countryside, has produced some truly gripping storylines over the past five decades, with some really memorable characters as well.
Often overshadowed by its longer-running Manchester-based rival Coronation Street, and the East London-centric BBC soap EastEnders, Emmerdale finally got the recognition it deserves when it won the award for Best British Soap at the British Soap Awards for the first time.
The soap has over the years offered city-dwellers, who make up the majority of the UK’s population, a nice glimpse into life in the English countryside, with of course a few dramatic plot twists.
It has introduced us to a number of long-term residents and families, such as the Dingles, the Tates, the Sugdens and the Windors, who have become household names across the country.
From them have emerged some rather interesting characters, including Kim Tate, a ‘super bitch’ role played by Claire King, who returned to the Dales in 2018 following her helicopter exit in 1999.
The Dingles, arguably the most popular family in the soap, have also produced some big names, including bad boy Cain (Jeff Hordley), loveable chef Marlon (Mark Charnock) and Woolpack Inn owner Charity (Emma Atkins).

Another Dingle on many people’s list for best character is Zak, played by Steve Halliwell, who was a mainstay of the soap for decades.
Jack Sugden, meanwhile, was for a long time the face of Emmerdale who was killed off-screen following the death of actor Clive Hornby in 2008.
Other notable characters include Seth Armstrong, who was played by Barnsley actor Stan Richards, who died in 2004 at the age of 78.
Viv Hope, the village gossip played by Deena Payne, is another fan favourite, as is dog-lover Edna Birch, who was written off the show following the off-screen death of actress Shirley Stelfox in 2015.
