As the wait for the second part of Yellowstone season five continues amid rumours Kevin Costner may be looking to step away from the role of John Dutton, it seems the cast have kept busy with other roles away from the Paramount Network hit. This includes Thomas Rainwater star Gil Birmingham who has a new project lined up on the big screen alongside a number of big names.

Birmingham has landed a part in the upcoming Wind River sequel titled The Next Chapter.

Yellowstone boss Taylor Sheridan wrote and directed the first Wind River film back in 2017, which Birmingham also starred in.

And The Next Chapter will see Birmingham reprise the role of Martin, although this time, Kari Skogland will be at the helm.

Sheridan isn’t the only person attached to the first flick not returning either as Wind River lead star Jeremy Renner also won’t star.

However, the cast of Wind River: The Next Chapter remains just as star-studded as its predecessor.

Succession star Alan Ruck was announced to appear in the upcoming blockbuster alongside Kali Reis and Tatanka Means at the same time as Birmingham.

Birmingham will step back into Martin’s shoes but there’s yet to be official word on who Ruck, Reis and Means will portray.

Elsewhere in the cast for the sequel, La Brea and 1883 star Martin Sensmeier will take on the lead role of Chip Hanson.

Chip’s called in to help the FBI when a series of murders go unanswered for on the Wyoming Native American reservation of Wind River fans were introduced to in the first movie.

However, the drama soon intensifies as Chip becomes involved in hot-blooded clashes between the authorities, the reservation itself and the villainous vigilante at large.

Birmingham and Sensmeier will reprise their roles but Ruck, Reis and Means aren’t the only newcomers to the movie franchise.

The Great Gatsby, Mudbound and White House Down star Jason Clarke will join the aforementioned ensemble.

While Scott Eastwood, who fans will recognise from roles in Suicide Squad and The Fate of the Furious, will also star.

And elsewhere, Chaske Spencer of Twilight fame will accompany his co-stars in the Wind River sequel.

Meanwhile, despite initially being billed for a summer return date, it looks like Yellowstone fans will be waiting a little longer to see Birmingham back on-screen as Thomas Rainwater.

In fact, Yellowstone’s Rip Wheeler star Cole Hauser delivered the rather disappointing update that filming doesn’t look likely to start until May.

“You know, we’ll see what’s next but right now I’m focussed on giving you guys 5B, you’ve been waiting for it a little while,” he said during a Q&A at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo earlier this month.

Captured by FOX 26 Houston, he added: “But we’re trying to go back to work in May so hopefully that’ll happen.”

Yellowstone season 5, part 2 will return in 2023 on Paramount Network in the USA and Paramount+ in the UK.
