Baby-faced killer Leighton Amies, 15, jailed for 12 years after knifing Tomasz Oleszak, 14, to death | The Sun

A BABY-FACED killer has been jailed for over a decade after brutally murdering a teenage boy with a steak knife.

Leighton Amies, 15, knifed Tomasz Oleszak, 14, in a nature park in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, last October.

The victim suffered an 8cm-deep wound to his chest in the horror attack, which is understood to have been over a "dirty look".

Amies has now been handed a minimum sentence of 12 years.

He had tried claiming he had slashed at another youth's coat and said he didn't know he had stabbed Tomasz in the attack.

But jurors saw through his lies and he was convicted of murder at Newcastle Crown Court in April.

In a victim impact statement, Tomasz' mother Kamila said: "I must somehow now live on without our amazing, gentle, kind son, who has left this world in such a violent, horrible and unnecessary way.

"Even getting up in the morning is painful.

"He was the most beautiful boy, with good manners and he hated violence and was not a fighter.

"I'm a shadow of who I previously once was. This day has changed me forever. I have a hole in my heart."

The boy's grandmother added that the family felt as if "someone ripped out our hearts with their bare hands".

Amies was walking through Whitehills Nature Park with his girlfriend at around 8pm when a group of youths followed them.

He then used a steak knife he had taken out with him for "reassurance" to slash Tomasz, who was unknown to him.

The thug then yelled "I've wetted your boy" – slang for stabbed – after delivering the fatal blow to Tomasz's chest.

Mark McKone KC, prosecuting, said: "He wanted them to know he had stabbed one of their number.

"It was a boast."

Amies claimed he was punched, kicked and grappled to the ground during the attack.

But the court was told the only injury he suffered was a minor cut to his thumb.

After the bloodbath, Amies stashed the knife in a bush and messaged a friend saying he would have it "melted".

The pal later revealed how the killer was "bouncing all over… he seemed happy that he had done it… he looked like himself… it didn’t faze him at all".

Amies later told jurors he could not remember ever thinking "I hope the boy is all right" when asked about stabbing Tomasz.

The killer was also convicted today of a charge of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm on the boy whose coat was slashed.

He had previously admitted carrying a blade.

Sentencing him today, the judge told Amies: "Tomasz was due to turn 15 just nine days after he was killed. He had his whole life in front of him.

"The only sentence is one of detention during His Majesty's pleasure.
