Brit 'arrested for smuggling 22lbs of cocaine hidden in suitcase into Mexico'

A British woman has been arrested in Mexico for allegedly smuggling more than 22lbs (10kg) of drugs through an airport, reports say.

The woman, who has not been named, flew from Amsterdam to Cancun Airport and was reportedly stopped by security at Terminal 2.

According to local media, authorities found nine packets and several containers stuffed with white powder thought to be cocaine.

Photos shared by Guardia Nacional on Twitter show the packages lined up and marked on a table at the airport.

Staff first spotted the suspicious cargo when the passenger’s suitcase was going through the airport’s X-ray machine.

It was the weight of the seemingly empty blue bag that aroused suspicion.

With the help of a clever sniffer dog, they discovered the illegal substance in a secret compartment of the luggage.

It is believed the woman was planning to enter the country with the large quantity of drugs, but no further details about her alleged plans were shared by police.

Mexican police tweeted yesterday: ‘In the arrivals area of Cancun International Airport, Quintana Roo, Guardia Nacional and Aduanas de México staff located various packages and containers with apparent cocaine, hidden in the false bottom of a suitcase belonging to a foreign passenger.’

The traveller is currently awaiting a decision from the attorney general, while the authorites work out the exact weight and origin of the substance.
