Britain to be hotter than MEXICO today as 26C Bank Holiday warm spell begins | The Sun

BRITAIN is set to be hotter than Mexico today – and every other day this weekend – as the 26C Bank Holiday warm spell begins.

While the predicted heatwave is not likely to hit the UK this Bank Holiday, it's set to be a warm, dry break for most.

And the warmer temperatures will be welcomed by sun-seekers and holiday makers alike – as 15million people are expected to make the most of the long weekend and head away.

You can also breathe a sign of relief if you're staying home and plan to dust off your barbecue or catch up with nearby friends.

London is looking to be the hottest spot in the UK all weekend, with highs of 25C and 26C.

The capital's temperatures will be higher than Mexico, which is forecast to be a notch colder – with scattered thunderstorms all weekend.

Bank Holiday travel chaos TODAY – best time to set off and roads to avoid

The fine weather comes just 24 hours after millions of Brits woke to thunderstorms and downpours, which flooded roads in the South East.

Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern said the lengthy spells of dry fine weather for many was being brought across by an Azores High.

Aidan said: “The Azores are a group of islands in the mid-Atlantic. semi-permanent high pressure sits here throughout much of the year.

"But what's been happening through this year so far and especially during the summer, is high pressure from the Azores keeps extending across the UK, hence the warm summer and the very dry summer that we've had.

"And that repeating pattern repeats again this weekend."

He added: "That's going to bring largely fine, dry and bright weather."

The meteorologist said there is no heatwave expected to hit this weekend, adding: "It will be a bit cooler compared with previous settled spells this summer."

London is set to have a high of 25C today and tomorrow, and 26C Sunday and Monday, and other southern parts of England will see temperatures only slightly cooler.

Aidan said there could be some rain down the spine of the country as the weekend progressed, "but they'll be few and far between".

It will be a bit cooler compared with previous settled spells this summer.

He added: "For the vast majority it's mostly looking dry, sunny spells, light winds, and feeling warm in the sunshine."

But, a breeze is expected to developing on the north east coast from Sunday, with Aidan warning the temperatures could drop for those heading to the beach.

That breeze will strengthen on Monday, and temperatures will drop.

Aidan said: "If you're heading to the beach, bear in mind that it could feel a bit cooler with that added breeze."

Earlier this week, the AA issued an amber traffic warning for the coming days, telling drivers to expect severe congestion from today until Bank Holiday Monday.
