Lifeguards in one Southern California city are being hailed as heroes after rescuing a small dog who ended up in the ocean and swimming away from shore.
Video posted to social media shows a Long Beach lifeguard holding a small white dog steady on their board while the animal shivers from the cold.
The incident happened on Saturday around 6pm when officials received a call about a small dog running around a lot in the area. Upon arrival, they found the pup in the ocean.
That’s when one lifeguard did not hesitate to put on his suit and jump into action, rescuing the pup and bringing him back to shore safely.
‘Long Beach lifeguards are heroes. Cheers,’ one person on Facebook wrote.

Social media users were quick to thank the lifeguard for saving the pup’s life
The video was posted by the Long Beach Fire Department late Saturday evening.
According to the post, the lifeguards were present when the dog ended up in the water.
‘When personnel arrived, they saw the pooch run into the ocean and start swimming out to sea,’ the post reads.
The lifeguard on duty moved quickly to help the stranded animal.
‘Lifeguard 7 put on his wetsuit, grabbed his rescue board and buoy, and headed out to rescue the small white lap dog,’ the Long Beach Fire Department said.
The dog had made it to the swim line in the ocean before a nearby boat crew was able to help with the rescue.
The boat crew helped to secure the animal with the lifeguard and onto the rescue board so the guard could swim into land.
The video quickly received thousands of views on the social media app.
Commenters have also added in their two cents, sharing their gratefulness to the lifeguards and their anger with the dog’s owner.
‘Oh thank you! The little guy is tired, wet but looks grateful anyway. You all are awesome,’ wrote one person on Facebook.

The Long Beach Fire Department initially stated in their post that an owner could not be located and asked the public to reach out to the local animal shelters if they had any information.
On Sunday, however, the fire department said the dog had been successfully reunited with its owner.
According to its website, Long Beach Lifeguards are responsible for monitoring and protecting more than 5,000 acres of oceanfront property.
The group also patrols more than nine miles of beaches in the Southern California city.
