The clowns happened to be dressed as emergency workers as part of an annual carnival procession going by as the blue car was seen crashing into the wall of a house.

The brigade of fancy dress ‘firefighters’ even had a mini fire engine on hand during the parade in Neyland, Pembrokeshire.

After coming to the rescue they handed over to real firefighters who turned up to deal with the incident.

The crash turned circus occurred on Neyland’s High Street at around 2.30pm on Saturday afternoon, the South Wales Argus reported.

Neyland’s 101st annual carnival took place last weekend.

One passerby said: ‘We couldn’t believe our eyes. No sooner had the car lost control and crashed into the wall just after it turned into Cambrian Road than all these clowns turned up.

‘I thought: ‘What a good job all these strapping lads are about’. Then I noticed that most of them were strapping ladies.

‘They ran over to the driver to make sure everything was ok and then helped the vehicle re-position itself back on the road.

‘And what tickled us more than anything was the fact that they turned up with their little red fire engine. You couldn’t make it up.’
