A young reveller died when he lay down on a stranger’s driveway after a boozy night out and was run over by the home owner’s car.

Tragedy struck when 22-year-old transport manager Henry Rafferty was walking home after spending the night with his pals in his home town of Hartlepool.

He laid on the drive of a home in Elwick Road, Hartlepool and was struck as the homeowner pulled into the property without noticing him.

He died at the scene from torso injuries despite desperate attempts to revive him after the accident around 11.20pm last August 26.

Teesside Coroner’s Court heard although he was on foot, Henry had drunk the equivalent of around three times the drink drive limit.

Coroner Karin Welsh concluded the death was a ‘tragic accident’. She added: ‘He had been out socialising. It looks as if he was making his way back home. For some reason, whether he had fallen or lay down, he was on the driveway of a property’

Cleveland Police said were no suspicious circumstances. Coroner Karin Welsh concluded the death was a ‘tragic accident’.

Grieving father Colin Rafferty said: ‘We can’t believe it’s happened. We all cry every day. It’s just so bad, the pain is unbearable.’
