Crowds watch in horror as man dies after falling from boat in Sydney Harbour just metres off popular city beach

A man has died after falling from a boat in Sydney Harbour while crowds at a popular tourist hotspot watched on in horror.

NSW water police were called to rescue the man in waters off Nielsen Park beach in Vaucluse at 1.30pm on Sunday. 

The man in his 60s was taken to nearby Rose Bay wharf where paramedics made desperate attempts to resuscitate him.

After the man was picked up by police he was taken to a nearby wharf where ambulance crews worked to resuscitate him 

Ambulance crews attempted to resuscitate him for more than 30 minutes.

Despite their efforts the man was pronounced dead at the scene. 

He was put onto a police boat and taken to police headquarters.

A large crowd of onlookers gathered to watch the tragedy unfold at a popular seaside area of Sydney

Police say investigations into the incident are continuing. 

The man will be formally identified and a report prepared for the Coroner. 

An elderly man was seen wearing wet clothes and being given towels to dry himself off with at the scene of the attempted resuscitation.

At one point an emergency services worker wrapped the man in a blanket and put a consoling arm around him as they offered him water.

it is understood an 18-year-old man was on board the vessel at the time the man fell into the water, but he was uninjured.
