Shoppers have been left disgusted after a Tesco store charged £10 for a tube of Colgate toothpaste as MPs grill supermarket bosses over rising profits.

The 75ml tube of Colgate Max White Ultra whitening paste was for sale in Tesco in Sheldon, Birmingham, for a whopping £10.

The same store also had a one litre bottle of Filippo Berio olive oil on sale for £10.40.

This comes after the ‘double whammy’ of a war in Ukraine and extreme hot weather in Spain sent the price of olive oil skyrocketing.

Temperatures in Spain – which is the world’s largest olive oil producer – reached up to 40C in April as rainfall has been in short supply, prompting poor harvests.

There are now genuine fears that increase shortages of the popular cooking oil will continue with no respite until 2025.

Walter Zanre, chief executive of leading brand Filippo Berio, which has seen prices surge by more than 23 per cent in the last year, said that the industry is ‘in crisis’.

Customers, who have grappled with soaring food costs amid the cost-of-living crisis, may have to deal with hefty price tags on their beloved cooking oil for months to come.

Shocked shoppers took to social media to share their frustration with the high price of the toothpaste.

One user said: ‘I thought this was fake but it’s actually £10 on the Tesco website too – where is the riot?’

Another said: ‘For £10 this better whiten everyone’s teeth on my street.’

A third joked: ‘Cheaper long term to have all my teeth ripped out and fitted with fake Turkey teeth.’

A fourth also added: ‘£133 a litre? Makes £1.40 for a litre of petrol seem cheap!’

Another customer complained: ‘What has it come to when you take £20 into a supermarket, buy a tube of toothpaste and some oil, and come away with no change?’

A 100ml tube of Colgate Triple Action is 98p at Tesco and a 75ml tube of Colgate Total Deep Clean Toothpaste is £5.

Supermarket bosses also faced a grilling from MPs today over why profits have been growing amid soaring food costs.

Food inflation was down to 14.6 per cent last month – from 15.4 per cent recorded by the British Retail Consortium in April, however, fresh food prices have soared.

Responding to the cost of the oil and toothpaste, one shopper said: ‘What has it come to when you take £20 into a supermarket, buy a tube of toothpaste and some oil, and come away with no change?
