Nadine Dorries has said she will resign as an MP only after she completes her own inquiry into why she was blocked from being made a peer.
Following Boris Johnson’s resignation last Friday, the close ally of the ex-prime minister said she would ‘immediately’ step down as the MP for mid-Bedfordshire.
But while Mr Johnson, and another close ally, Nigel Adams, have officially resigned – with both by-elections now set for July 20 – former Cabinet minister Ms Dorries has now said she will first look into the circumstances around Mr Johnson’s resignation honours list.
To do this, she has put in ‘subject access requests’ to several government departments to demand any information held about her.

Ms Dorries said: ‘I have requested copies of WhatsApps, text messages, all emails and minutes of meetings both formal and informal with names of senior figures unredacted.’ She added that her office ‘continues to function as normal’. Ms Dorries has accused Rishi Sunak of ‘duplicitously and cruelly’ blocking her peerage.
Writing in the Mail this week, she said ‘sinister forces conspired against me and have left me heartbroken’.
On Wednesday, the Prime Minister’s press secretary said: ‘It’s obviously unusual to have an MP say they will resign with immediate effect and for that not to take place… the Prime Minister believes that it’s important that they have certainty.’
