An environmental crime investigation boss has died after being attacked by a hippo while camping with his wife in a national park.
Kobus De Wet was stormed and killed by the hippo while staying in Kruger National Park in South Africa.
A spokesperson for the South African National Parks (SANParks) – where De Wet worked – said the tragedy happened on August 12 during the day.
Kruger National Park put a post up on Twitter about the incident which read: ‘SANParks today announced the passing of one of its senior managers in the Environmental Crime Investigative Unit (ECI) Mr Kobus De Wet.

‘He was stormed and killed by a hippo while camping in (KNP) on Saturday 12 August 2023.’
They added: ‘Executive manager sends out sincere condolences.’
Replying to the tweet, one person commented: ‘What a tragedy. Condolences to family and friends.’
Another wrote: ‘May his soul rest in peace, condolences to the family who lost their loved one.’
A third said: ‘How very tragic.’
